Jazz at LACMA Featuring John Prouxl

  • Apr 26, 2013 · 6:00 PM

John Proulx

Friday, April 26, 2013 | 6 pm

The jazz scene is all abuzz about young singer/pianist/composer John Proulx. His piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. John's latest CD, Baker’s Dozen (Remembering Chet Baker) is a tribute to the late trumpet player and vocalist. "Proulx is front and center, overflowing with fresh zeal and sparkling energy."—Jazz Times

BP Grand Entrance | Free, no reservations

Map: http://www.lacma.org/visit/campus-map

Parking: free after 7:00 but the jazz only lasts until 8:00 and I can't guarantee you will find us if you get there past 7:00. I believe there is plenty of street parking and I will drive over there to get the skinny on it before the event.

The Grand Entrance is located at the Grand Entrance? I don't know where it is! It says #6 on the map in the link above. Not sure where that is so leave in plenty of time to find us. It can't be that hard to find though. I would say follow the crowd. We did a jazz event here in the past and it was a bit of a disaster as nobody was on time and it was hard to find people so I'm going to think of some way to make this easier. I'll take suggestions from you guys on the best way to find our group. Thanks!

Loved the music and the musicians! Admit that some of the time I talked toooo much when I shoulda been listening more to the performance. This venue is great for background music while socializing and not seeming rude to the performers

A beautiful venue and wonderful thing for LACMA to give to the community. I enjoyed his music but actually enjoyed the company more and had a really great time.

I had a great time--felt very welcomed, and enjoyed many conversations! The music was fine; I thought last week's talent stronger, but who can complain about free jazz?@

Nora and Mollyb, I'll save you seats. Just read my posts and look for the yellow sign with black GROOVY lettering which will be held at ground level once the music starts. I'll try my best to put it on the stone wall for people to find. And yes, this is def an outside event, so dress warmly. :D

I've got a row of 5 seats saved on audience right, 8 rows back, if anybody wants one. Look for the brick-colored blanket and/or the green shirt.

It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it to LACMA Jazz tonight, but hopefully next time. Let's plan another event for the LATIN JAZZ series, which begins SATURDAY, May 25 from 5-7PM on the LACMA lawn! Every Saturday night till September!

Hi all! Toni, Kate and myself will be there at 4:30 (early) on the raised planter to the LEFT. I'll try my best to save space big enough for you and me both to secure with our blankets together, and will look for you at 5pm. John, I'd love a bit of wine from you!! :D I'll be wearing groovy bright pink with a bright color in my hair and green pants, and of course the yellow sign with GROOVY black lettering. We'll save seats for the people who said they're arriving after 6pm.

Parking details: http://www.lacma.org/visit/plan-your-visit . Scroll down.

Thank you everyone... this sounds really fun!

There is parking in their garage for $10 or I have heard there is paid parking across the street but am not sure of the cost to park there. Maybe $10 also.

I normally get off work at 7- earliest possible exit is 6:30, leaving from my work that is in Burbank. Might be there too late to either get a good seat or even meet up with folks- but have done this quite a while ago and it was definitely groovy.

Thanks Lisa, we will look for your groovy self around 5:30. About the location of the planter... Coming in from the Grand Entrance it's actually to the LEFT. However, if you are facing the band, it's to your right. Not many planters, so just eyeball around for me. Don't know how groovy I'll look, probably wear all black, but the sign will be yellow with black GROOVY lettering and I'll be sitting on a red and a blue tarp. I'm going to try to reserve space nearest the band as possible on the planter. Chairs can block other people's view, so if you are able sit without one on the tarp, that would be ideal me thinks, but naturally understand if you require one. I think it's also great for those of you who want to sit in the chair section together, if someone else wants to come and hold up a GROOVY sign in that section too for ya'll. :D How does that sound?

  • Lisa V.

thank you to all! I still may be able to get ther early so I'm hoping it will all work out but many thanks to those of you that are willing to help out and get there early! I've GOT to get a groovy sign!

    April 23, 2013

  • Lisa V.

Thanks for all the great info everyone! Regrettably, my job is very stressful this week and I can't get there as early as the rest of you. 5:30, is probably the earliest I can arrive. However, I'll very much appreciate you guys that can help me out and get there earlier! If my schedule changes, and I won't know this until Friday afternoon, I will let you guys know. So...having said that, if you guys want to try to secure an area by the planter, I'd be most grateful and appreciative of you helping me out! So, it's the raised planter to the far right then? I'll put out an e-mail for everyone. So should we bring chairs and blankets then? I've only been to the area where there's a bar, imagine that, and I stand, look groovy, and chill while sipping wine, so you guys tell me what works best for a large group. Thanks everyone!

I was at LACMA today so I inquired about this. :D People arrive as early as 4pm to get seats. Reserving chairs is not permitted, however reserving space on the raised planter is allowed with blankets and lawn chairs. People are welcome to bring food and drink including wine and such. People are also welcome to bring chairs to place on the concrete area. At 5pm pretty much all the chairs are taken as Juliann said. I was told to be there at 5pm to reserve space on the planter and will try my best to be there then, if not 4:30 to lay down 2 tarps for us and hold up a GROOVY sign. Perhaps Toni Whaley and I can put our tarps together if you decide to come earlier? At 6pm, I will give seats away to people outside our group as in only fair. How does that sound? :D

    Wouldn't miss it.

Last week, on the first Friday of LACMA Jazz, there were only a few single seats scattered in the front seating area at 5pm, one hour before the concert. For big groups (such as L.A. Foodies), people often plan to gather on the raised planter area off to the right, a ways back from the stage (but this fills up fast, too). People are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets on the raised planter. Bringing food and drink is okay, provided you're subtle about it. ;>

Thanks for the helpful comments Juliann. I will plan to get there about 30-45 before the event. Is there a Host? who will try to marshall an area for us. The raised planter area off to the right is a great for viewing and listening. Toni

We did that last time and all we did was take calls for two hours...I'll do it again closer to the event but I don't know if it really works! Thanks!

Hi Lisa ~ could you perhaps have a little Groovy People sign, or tie a couple of balloons to a chair so we can find you? I've tried meeting people there before and it can be difficult, especially if you don't know any faces.
