Pie baking for Thanksgiving

  • Nov 17, 2012 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Generally volunteer opportunities are all spoken for around Thanksgiving. But, we can make pies to give to area shelters.

Thanks to Scott Chapman from Recess - Come out to Play (http://www.meetup.com/Recess-Come-out-to-play-West-Houston/), we will have the use of his hotel's industrial kitchen. They have also generously donated pecans and pie crusts. We'll organize ingredients needed closer to the time, plan to come out grab a few drinks from the hotel's bar and bake some pies that will make someone else's holiday a bit brighter.

Due to the space availability in the kitchen, we're having to limit the number of RSVPs so please keep your RSVP updated if you are no longer available to join us.

All - have fun tonight! So wish I could be there with you all! This started off with very simple goals, get together, bake and have fun - help someone along the way. Scott and the Marriott in Katy have really taken this simple idea to the next level. Scott anticipates you will crank out 100 pies tonight. I spoke to Break of Life again earlier today and they are VERY excited. You may drop off pies before 3 tomorrow.

Hello - OK please tell me (and my friend) something to bring. Not quiet sure from the list what to add. Thanks!

Hey Mary Jo...I think that either blueberry or cherry filling or frozen blueberries or cherries pitted...thank you soooo much

      November 16, 2012

  • Scott C.

Dawn, it looks like fresh or frozen peaches would be a nice addition to what we have coming already. Can I count on you for those?? Enough for at least 5 pies

    November 16, 2012

  • Scott C.

Ok everyone, I have special Aprons for our bakers and I have printed special labels for the pie boxs. Dinner will be provided by the hotel. Please bring your own adult beverages if you would like to drink while your baking. This is turning into quite a nice meetup!!

Ok, I am on sensory overload reading all the previous emails so if someone just wants to tell me what to bring, I am fine with that. I was thinking I would bring fresh apples but someone mentioned they may be bringing premade apple filling so now not sure.

      apples sound wonderful!!!

      November 15, 2012

  • Scott C.

Ok Erin...we will definetely have to do the cranapple pie as that is one of my favorites....but the key lime while wonderful would need real cream to finish it and unfortunately be on the naughty list for our pie adventure...we can have a cream pie meet up soon tho!! :)
    You rock!!

    November 14, 2012

Good afternoon everyone, so I have the pecan pies, white chocolate pecan pies, and fudge pies taken care of so the question is whats left?? I don't think really cream pies are a good idea as they don't hold well for extended periods of time. I'm just going to make a list for everyone so we might get a few people to see if they want to tackle one kind or team up. The assortment probably doesn't matter as much as the sheer number of pies we produce(as to feed more folks), so think quick and easy??
    Pumpkin
    Chess
    Apple
    Cherry
    Blueberry
    Peach

anything else that is either a custard or a cooked fruit pie would be wonderful!!

I have a separate room reserved so that we can relax drink a little, eat a little and maybe watch a movie while the pies bake (we can watch it in two parts if needed).

    (Pt 2):
    As far as ingredients:
Pie shells and pecans have been donated by the hotel (Scott is THE Chef at the hotel).
We're working on getting boxes for the pies donated as well.

    But, we'll need the following:
Please bring mixing spoons, cutters, etc.
    PIE INGREDIENTS.
Please use the message section below to declare what type of pie you'd like to make.
I'm putting up $100 to get some basic ingredients we'll need: Sugar, flour, spices, eggs that I will bring Saturday night (Costco Run)
But, please plan on bringing fruit (canned or fresh) and any other special ingredient that you'd like to incorporate in your favorite dish(es).

Thursday I'll start sending around specific assignments if it feels like we are not compensating for certain ingredients.

Good morning! Less than a week for this event and I'm traveling on business this week so wanted to provide you an update. Please note - the venue changed from my house in Humble to the Houston Marriott Energy Coridor in Katy thanks to our friend Scott Chapman.

We'll have use of a small industrial kitchen so that we aren't all fighting over counter space and a single oven.

Because this is for charity, Scott was able to sign a waiver that will allow us to bring in our own adult beverages so please bring a bottle of wine to share with your new friends all working together to bake for a good cause.

I have emails out to several area shelters and we'll narrow down which one or two shelters will be receiving our finished pies.

Everyone is able to bring their own drinks and snax now, so lets have fun!!

Natalie, that is a first - Fall Creek was geographically desirable for your plans? Haha! So sorry, was just not thinking we'd have enough room to make more than a few pies. We'll definitely miss you!

    • Natalie

Haha! Oddly enough it was, have several things going that day and the almost to Katy location is further across town from the previous event which is on the other side of town from the one before that. Then there is another event in Clear Lake that evening. Waaay to much driving for one day I think! Lolz :(

We are talking to someone with access to an industrial kitchen. If we go that route, we must purchase drinks from their bar rather than bring our own. I don't think that will be a problem for anyone. Venue is in the Katy area.
