Hike Governor Dick In Lebanon County

I am proposing a hike at the Governor Dick park site. For those who do not know Governor Dick was named for a husky man in the middle 1800's by the name of “Dick”. He was a wood chopper and charcoal burner in the area and was dubbed “Governor” by his friends. He took hundreds of cords of wood from the spot on which the sixty-six foot circular observation tower now stands. The wood was charred and the charcoal used in the busy pig iron furnaces at Cornwall and surrounding area. This is the parks Web site http://parkatgovernordick.org/dnn/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx
If you are a history buff at all you will find this interesting, I know I did. From the top of the tower (it is a series of ladders to reach the top) you can see 5 different counties.
I propose meeting at the Environmental Center and hiking to the tower and back. This can be done in about 2 hours or so but there are a lot more trails here including a bolder field. Here is a link to the map of the parks trails. http://parkatgovernordick.org/dnn/Portals/0/Governor%20Dick%20Trail%20Map%20Full%20Property%202-23-11.pdf I would be open to hike more of the trails if others in the group are interested.

The bolder field is a bit hard to get to but still fun! I have spent over four hours climbing around on the boulders. I have the time and date bellow. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask! There is also a great ice cream place located in Mt. Gretna that is a wonderful place to cool down after the hike.

Sorry, I don't want to walk on a muddy, slippery trail.

No worries. Maybe we can do it again in the fall?

Ok here is what I am thinking. I can't really do the hike much later then what I have it planned at now. I say we go for it. Just bring rain gear if you have it just in case and shoes that you don't mind getting muddy. The trail is packed earth and rock so I don't think it will be to bad. The view from the tower may not be the best due to cloud cover but maybe we will get luck. Remember your bug spray, water and any snacks you want to bring along for yourself.

There are plenty of trails that we don't have to hit the rocks if it doesn't seem safe.

I will be in the parking lot by 9:40. I will either be in a black dodge pickup or on a black motorcycle. All depends on the weather. If anyone gets turned around in the morning here is my phone number[masked]-7060. Barring any major weather changes I will see everyone there by 10 am. Have a great Friday night!!

Hey there everyone! I need a consensus from the group on how wet is to wet to go hiking? I know they want a steady rain for the next two days and still possible more rain on Saturday, so what does everyone think? Let me know. :)

I'm rather doplic and don't think a wet trail is a good idea for anyone. For the adventurers and well balanced sounds like it will be OK. Maybe I'll change my mind!

Accuweather is the BEST at getting good weather forecasts. Looks like we're safe all the way up until 6 pm. But, the morning does have a lot cloudiness. I would agree with Wendy, and say that moving it up a bit to say noon for a start would be a good idea. Looks like 2:00 would be best with sun, but that might be a bit late for all.

Hey just a side note. The 55+ community that my parents live in is having a community yard sale the same Saturday as the hike. It is close by if anyone would like to stop by there before the hike I would be glad to give you directions. I love a good yard sale!!!
