Boiling Springs -Hike the AT and enjoy a hot beverage at Caffe 101

We will hike a small section of the Appalachian Trail in Boiling Springs and/or enjoy a peaceful stroll around Children's lake. The agenda may change based on the weather that day.

Afterwards, we can grab a hot beverage and maybe some "from scratch" baked goods at Caffe 101. I love this place :)

My first Meetup with this group and I thoroughly enjoyed it- everybody was nice, approachable and fun. Great first impression and experience :-)

I am gonna have to bale. I really wanted to do, but had a simple procedure on my teeth and they gave me penicillin, which is making me sick - no sleep last nite.

No problem. I had to take penicillin recently too and had a bad reaction to it

Wow, plenty of people signed up for this one. Nice!! Unfortunately, I'll have to back out now, because a friend from out of town is showing up this weekend (yeah, one of those deals). Enjoy everyone! Kim does a great job organizing these things!

Enjoy the hike my friend. Too bad this weekend didn't work out, but we'll hang soon. Look at Kim's meditation/yoga stuff. Sounds pretty cool!

Are we meeting at Cafe 101 prior to starting the hike?

    November 5, 2013

    • Kim

Yes. We will meet there first.

Hi All. I think the decision is to do Zach's suggestion to shuttle some cars to the AT parking lot on Trindle. It's a 4 mile hike to the lot. Then we can drive back and enjoy some beverages. It should not take more than a couple hours or less. Since RSVPs sometimes change, I think it may be best to still meet in front of Caffe 101 and decide who will park their cars at the Trindle lot and shuttle etc once we are all together. That is unless there are people that want to volunteer to park their cars in the Trindle lot from the get go and we will pick you up and bring you back to the starting point.I hope I'm making sense..because I usually don't.

    Howdy everyone!
The weather is supposed to be cool, crisp and sunny Saturday morning, but should be perfect for a stroll out and about the Boiling Springs area. I'm touching base with the group here to see if which way we'll be heading on the AT. If we go south, Center Point Knob is a 3-mile walk, half cornfields, half climb to the top. Otherwise, we can carpool from Boiling Springs and AT parking lot on Trindle. That's about 4 miles one way, but just a rolling countryside walk. I'm open to either but looking forward to getting out and about. Have a great week everyone.

I'm fine with choosing when w get there, but I expected we woukd only be on the trail less than 2 hours. I need to leave by 1 or 2, so I can back out if you all think its gonna be longer.

    November 4, 2013

It would hard to say if it will be less than 2 hours. I think my plan would be only 3-4 miles. A normal hiking pace is about 2-2.5 miles per hour so it may be only 2 hours (give or take how long it takes us to congregate, pick our direction (n,s), any stops, and group size). The terrain should not be difficult. It will be out and back, so we should be able to judge time. Hope that helps.

Especially with the Caffe closing at 4pm, it looks like we should be done by then. I have work from 5pm-11pm, so I'd just need to go by about 4pm.

    November 4, 2013

    • Kim

Yes, I would want to get back in time before the caffe closes. I don't think our hike will be that long.

Will anyone be super upset if I just pick the route when we get there? We can discuss what works for everyone. I know there is map by the Appalachian trail office. I have hiked a small section through farmland and up into the woods. I guess I am the play-it-by-ear organizer of the group :)

  • Frank

I would prefer less than 5, as I have a bad back, sorry.

    October 29, 2013

Hi All. I will come up with a route and post it soon (unless anyone has any suggestions). I don't see it as being any more than a 5 mile hike, if that. It may also depend on the weather.

sorry folks having knee surgery next week so I won't be doing any hiking for a while.

Hi All-There is pretty much a big chance I am moving this to November 9th now. :) Sorry, but after talking to organizer Brian, it is likely that we will be posting a more "unique" event for November 2nd and I don't want members to have to choose. We've been talking about this one for awhile and I'd like to attend it myself :) One of our members may be hosting a yoga/silent hike/and meditation workshop. I know..I'm kind of the worst co-organizer ever haha

It's been a while since I've been down to Boiling Springs. Perhaps a hike to White Rocks on the AT? From Cafe 101, it's probably about a five mile walk. Or we could carpool a short distance to walk up to the rocks and cut our hike in half. Just putting it out there...

    October 9, 2013

Your guess is as good as mine :) I need to research. Last time I was there I probably did 5 miles RT. Hiked through some farm fields up into the woods a bit and back. It was a play by ear thing haha

Also same as Alexander. It's somewhat likely Taco Bell will want me to be with them doing taco stuff.
