Words of Wisdom:
~ Please review Liability Release statement at THIS LINK

~ Proper gear, a working machine and gas in the tank is highly recommended.
~ Ride within your comfort zone and leave room for bad karma.
~ Lead may pass slower traffic when it's safe. You don't have to. Remember, someone will wait for you at turns, so just relax and have fun.
~ Lead maintains the Pace according to road conditions with safety of all riders in mind. Be mindful of others in the group. Let faster riders get ahead of you by moving to the right and signaling them to pass you. And if you want to pass the rider(s) who are in front of you, make sure to do so safely and without startling them.
~ Let someone on the ride know if you have a medical condition or have allergies.

~ If you know the area and would like to sweep for the group (AM shift, PM shift
or both), please let me know.
~ Good stuff to read before going on group
rides (CLICK).

Keep an eye for the rider(s) behind you so they won't take a wrong turn.
If they get lost, you'll buy their lunch

Out of idle curiosity, when is Monarch butterfly migration season? I saw a spectacular show at the Tech Museum IMAX theatre on the scientist that proved monarch migration (Mexico to Canada). Now that I know some of the amazing facts about the migration, it would be fun to see a migration in process. While most (volume wise) monarchs migrate from Mexico through Texas and midwest to somewhere near Toronto, there is a smaller volume migration path up through Monterey and on to somewhere in BC. More than you needed to know about Monarch butterflies? OK, then, it's not so much about the butterflies, but rather another reason to ride to Monterey -- good 'nuf for moi.

Grady, Late Oct to Dec is the ideal season to watch monarch migration in Santacruz, Natural bridges Eucalyptus trees. Make a trip early on a cold gloomy day to see the clusters. On a warm bright day butterflies are spread out...

    • Grady F.

I think we have the potential for a new theme ride here: "Flight of the Monarchs." Cold & gloomy is precisely the kind of day to get out & go on a mellow (noob-friendly) ride in order to stave off cabin fever. For you GOT fans, "Winter is Coming."

This ride was a great recipe for a fun day. Take a few fairly technical sections, a healthy dollop of backroad twisties, sprinkle in some two lane highway cruising, and a large portion of full-on fast freeway riding. Mix together, stir and set aside to simmer. In the meantime, prepare a sit down lunch, with all members basically sitting at one giant long table, add friendship and camaraderie, and place this in Monterey at about 75 degrees. For additional zest, pull a small squad from the main group and have them divert onto a different road. Also, send the Sweep down that road, to try and figure out what happened, for just a hint of flavor. Pull the Sweep back, mix with two other riders, tracking on yet another path, to combine back in with the main group at the end of the cycle. Arrange the entire concoction into a serving configuration and serve with Peet's coffee.
All participants will smile & enjoy this motorcycle dish, no matter where they ended up. :-)
    See you on the road!

I think Tex's being in Monterey has brought out a little of Steinbeck's literary genius in him. Nicely done.....just like the ride itself. Thanks for the fun and lunch one and all.

But I am loving the fact that mellow riders are overtaking moderate pacers in the last lap. Two in a row now. Yippie! Awesome ride guys. Thanks.

  • Patti

Tex, you forgot the wonderful strawberry fragrance between Santa Cruz and Monterey! It made me want a strawberry margarita!!! :-) That sure was a fun day! Thanks to all who made it possible.

      Strawberry fields, forever!

I pass that smell on my way to work every day, Bad part is mud on the road every morning so the bike stays dirty. On hot days it sucks.... Strawberries for 10 min, Then I hit the sewage treatment plant next to the freeway (68)... After that the fish packing plant on Sanborn. Bright side is going home on a hot day I go threw the strawberries last. LOL

    Nice ride with great riders.

Thanks everyone, particularly our usual suspects for a fabulous excursion tour. Our regional micro climates cooperated well. I had a blast and I hope you did as well. - - - - Those who turned right on Bailey instead of following us missed the best part of the ride ..... . and that calls for a reminder.... if anyone is planning to leave the group DO NOT RIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GROUP, INSTEAD RIDE IN THE BACK and be sure to waive good bye when you are peeling off so the sweep knows you are leaving. Otherwise people will follow you.

    September 15, 2013

    • Dan G

Yes, definitely the last part was the great. I thought I was lost since you and the leads created a little gap and I added to it by slowing down and second guessing where I was going. Fortunately, especially since Kalen and John were following me, I was actually on the right road and caught up with you guys.

      September 16, 2013

  • Patti

Great ride. Great people. Another great day! :-)

    September 16, 2013

  • Kalen

That was a lot of fun, thanks for the ride!

    September 15, 2013

  • Grady F.

That was fun. Weather was superb, got to see Marty "flex" the Bicep (nice V-Rod), and even had some twisties in AM and PM sessions. Bravo <golf clap>

  • Dan G

Glad to meet everyone and have a another great ride with a great group.

    September 15, 2013

  • Dan G

Hah, I did the exact opposite. I was intending to drift off on Almaden Rd and head directly home. Instead, I followed behind the leads thinking we would pass Almaden lake but we never did and next thing I know we were already at Pete's.

    1 · September 15, 2013

  • Tiffanie P.

Excellent ride and group as usual! Unfortunately we followed the wrong group and missed the last stop at Peet's... Oh well :-/ See you all next time.

    September 15, 2013

    • Steven

Tiffanie, we were with you on that one...I was like, where did Hwy 101 just pop out from..LOL

      September 15, 2013

    • Tiffanie P.

Exactly Steven! But Lorne, it's not your fault that I follow whatever or whoever is in front of me, like a lemming! Just don't go riding off any cliffs if I am behind you :-)

My husband and I don't get to ride much with each other, but we had a lot fun today riding with everyone one . Thank Mehran and all the Road Marshalls for all that you do. Have a great week everyone.

Awesome ride today Mehran! You know all the great twisty roads in the Santa Cruz mountains, and I love it! Enjoyed seeing everyone and meeting some great new people! Until next time... ride on!

It seems a few bikes turned on bailey instead of following the group to Pete's coffee. Hope you all had a good day.

Bring lots of coins for parking meters (street parking). I bet we can fit 2-3 bikes in a single slot. There's also a parking garage near by. Cannery Row will be buzzing with people, bikes and cars.

This weekend is the Cherry's Jubilee Motorsports Festival in Monterey. It's going to be packed with people, hot rods, classic cars, and motorcycles.

    September 12, 2013

    • Dan G

It's going to be a very busy weekend down there. Triathlon near the row, adobe arts festival downtown, and Monterey bay harvest arts & crafts faire.

      September 12, 2013

    • Mehran

      Thanks Dan for heads-up

      September 12, 2013

Mehran, if you have any cancelations please let me know, after all
who else has gone so far as to give you a John Steinbeck Cannery Row quote!!

“Cannery Row in Monterey in California is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream. Cannery Row is the gathered and scattered, tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots and junk heaps, sardine canneries of corrugated iron, honky tonks, restaurants and whore houses, and little crowded groceries, and laboratories and flophouses. Its inhabitant are, as the man once said, "whores, pimps, gambler and sons of bitches," by which he meant Everybody. Had the man looked through another peephole he might have said, "Saints and angels and martyrs and holymen" and he would have meant the same thing.”
    ― John Steinbeck, Cannery Row
