Route: ~  120 (+/-)  miles of superb back-roads of Santa Cruz Mtns. Ride Ends around 4:30 PM back in civilization.

• Rain:  Follow this ancient no-more-rain dance to ensure dry skies and dry roads :-)

Words of Wisdom:

~ Please review Liability Release statement at THIS LINK

~ Proper gear, a working machine and gas in the tank is highly recommended.

~ Ride within your comfort zone and leave room for bad karma.

~ Leads may pass slower traffic when it's safe. You don't have to. Remember, someone will wait for you at turns, so just relax and have fun.

~ Leads will maintain the Pace according to road conditions with safety of all riders in mind. Be mindful of others in the group. Let faster riders get ahead of you by moving to the right and signaling them to pass you. And if you want to pass the rider(s) who are in front of you, make sure to do so safely and without startling them.

~ If you know the area and would like to sweep for the group (AM shift, PM shift or both), please tell the Lead.

~ Good stuff to read before going on group rides (CLICK).

~ Keep an eye for the rider(s) behind you so they won't take a wrong turn.

As some of you may know, even though I made it up to Skywood Trading Post, I wasn't able to go on the ride with all of you because there is something wrong with the charging system on my bike. You have no idea how bummed out I am about that. I was really, Really, REALLY looking forward to this ride!!! Price of an old bike, apparently. So, after you all left, the bike started up without any problem and I had no trouble getting it home. I kept my GPS and my heated gear off for the ride home (cold!) and had already unhooked my headlight. I even went so far as to try my best not to use my brakes or turn signals in an effort to save battery power. I will be putting it on the trickle charger tomorrow, in preparation for taking it in to the shop. Today, I have to use the charger on my truck, since it already has a dead battery from lack of use! Many thanx to Dave, Martin and Richard for the suggestions and use of tools. Hope you all have a great ride!

    See you on the road!

Close-call or near-miss on Gazos Creek:
Hi all. It seems some of riders of our on Gazos Creek were too close to the middle of the road, according to 2 riders coming from the opposite side. It is critical to stay close to the right side of the road and leave room for cars, trucks and other traffic coming from the opposite side, while also watching for pedestrians, cyclists and debris. Remember that we only have part of 1/2 of the road to ride.

    1 · January 13, 2014

    • Martin M

Speaking of safety... Beginning to ride excercises in abandonded parking lots are fairly safe. Good practice areas. State Highways, like 9, not so good. Build confidence off road. Then, when you are comfortable, slowly move to the streets.

      2 · January 13, 2014

    • Katherine

I couldn't have said it better Marty. Remember your MRE course tips too: You must be able to look through the turn as you ride. You should have this down to a fair degree before tackling very technical rides. You can build confidence, as Marty said, in wide open, empty parking lots.

It was a great mellow Sunday. Roads, sky and mother nature cooperated as well. Large groups are always a challenge to keep intact, but the rewards are many times more than the effort. Everyone schmoozing with each other during lunch break, sharing stories at rest stop and spreading gossips over helmet communication devices is what makes group rides so much fun :-)

Thanks to our veteran riders, the rookies and the newbies for coming out in the middle of Winter ;-> Special thanks to our usual suspects and recruits for helping keep the group intact. I sure had a fun time today and I hope you all enjoyed the day. Weather permitting, next week (Jan 18th) we are heading to North of Golden Gate. We'll be back in 408/650/831 area code Jan 26th. Until next time.

Ah Man, Sunday is when the 49ers play....It's the playoffs...What do I choose???

    1 · January 10, 2014

    • Marty M.

Steven said: "DVR live football?? That would be like recording Thursday news and watching it on Friday. LOL. I have good reading, selective hearing is another thing altogether". =)

I was thinking you would watch it the same day as soon as you got home from the ride. Think of all the commericals you could blow by and all your own instant replays. We will be watching it at Lamppost Pizza in Paterson. They got it all set up for us!

      January 11, 2014

being my first ride in the area I had no idea what to except. Some of the sections were really surprising, especially because the change of scenery tnd road type was so sudden! IT was fun, but I could keep the pace only uphill, downhill I still don't dare to go fast :D
Kudos to the guys marking the turns, they were a blessing every time I was starting to think I got lost.

    2 · January 12, 2014

    • Akiko

I'm with you on the downhills, Ignacio. I was going so slowly and using my breaks a lot coming down the narrow, windy road coming into Boulder Creek. Sorry to those behind me!

      1 · January 12, 2014

  • Martin M

    Tex, Don't feel bad...
I ended up with the same problem, but we were at a crawl going up 9 with cars overtaking us. Between my 90 watt H4, and low RPM's my alternator just could not keep the battery charged. I didn't think it was wise to rev it out in 1st gear all the way up 9. I ended up turning off the headlight going back down 9, and made it back. On the charger now.

    1 · January 12, 2014

    • Tex L.

Yeah, as I mentioned, I guess that's the price we pay for having, and riding, our "classic relics" (a term I just made up!) But I'm glad you, too, made it home okay.

Dave, Rick, Big John, Martin, Mark B, Svaha!Dean, Tex, Paul, Mike, Alan, Toni and Steve S -- I would like to ask for your help to “Marshal” our large group * * *

Marshals please ride behind me and help mark the turns for the rest of the group. When you are prompted to mark a turn, please stop in a visible spot "before" the turn and use your signal and/or your hands to tell riders which way they should go. Wait for sweep. No need to rush to come up front. I will stop to regroup and for road marshals to come up front to get ready for the next sets of corners to mark.

    * Tex, if you prefer you can stay close to Martin and keep an eye on the group.

    * Dave, staging, KSU and getting out of STP lot for 50+ riders requires “finesse”. Please help get everyone lined up and ready to roll.

    * Marshals, be sure to park your bikes where you won’t get blocked by others. You will be among the first to line up as we stage to leave parking lot. Thank you all.

With Saturday rain on the way, I moved the ride to Sunday 1/12.

Looks like some people did the dance wrong. Toni did the dance wearing high hills (not bare foot) and Paul used an accordion instead of flute. That made the gods angry and we have no choice but to reschedule to Sunday. Hope this will not mess up your plans and you can still make the ride. Marty, sorry for crowding the Sunday calendar.
