Thunder by the Bay in Sarasota

They have a pretty nice biker event in Sarasota so let's head North to Thunder by the Bay.

It's a fairly long ride up there (about 85 miles) so we'll be heading out a bit earlier than we normally do.

Southern riders meetup at Ft Myers Harley-Davidson 8:45AM  KSU 9:15AM

Northern riders meetup at Slip Not Lounge at 9:45AM  KSU 10:00AM

We'll make a pit stop about halfway up.  Mostly for the women to rest their butts cuz I no longer have to stop every hour for gas with my new big boy bike. ;-)

Beach Route: 2 hrs 35 mins

Country Route: 2 hrs 9 mins

Put a note in your RSVP telling us which route you prefer to go on.

There is NO specific return time. Some people like to stay longer than others.  So, if you need a guide to get you home, make sure you hook up with someone that knows how to get back.  I'm assuming I'll take I-75 back at least part way (even though I hate I-75!).  And, I'm assuming I'll be there about 3 hours.

Wish I wouldn't have forgotten my wallet! Missed the group ride up! Still had fun with everyone at lunch and wandering the streets. Even had a blast riding back with Wayne on our Boulevard twins. Felt like his side-car !!!!! :-) I'll be in the pack on our next ride out! Great meet-up as usual Roger, thanks.

It was great meeting everyone and I am really glad I got the chance to ride with the group today. As some of you know, I am a professional photographer and I never go to these events without my camera. I captured over 200 photos today and selected a few to feature on my blog. Please take a minute to check out my shots from the day at: http://www.redlineimages.com/blog/2013/1/5/thunder-at-the-bay-sarasota-florida. At the bottom of the post you can comment, share and like the post as well. I'd be pleased if you did. Thanks again and see you next time.

Awesome ride up there. Alot of spectacular bikes at the event and good food too. Thank to everyone who tried to get my bike going. It ran fine all the way back to Fort Myers.

    January 5, 2013

    • Roger

Uh oh! What happened with your bike?

      January 5, 2013

    • Lora N

It over heated and stalled about 50 feet from our parking area. I don't think it liked the stop and go traffic.

This was my first time out with the group. I did not get to meet everyone but thanks to those I did for making me feel welcomed. The ride up was great, I never rode in such a large group before. The event was cool, with some very nice bikes on display. I look forward to riding with you all again and I will try to post some of my pics from the event.

    January 5, 2013

    • Roger

Glad you enjoyed it, Bryon. It WAS a good ride. Most of our rides are only about 8 or 10 bikes. This event always draws lots of people.

The ride there thru the beach route was awsome. And I saw some great bikes Thanks Roger . It was good to see old friends and meet new ones

This was our first time coming up to this event and we had a BLAST! Just getting back to the hotel to rest our poor aching bones. It was nice finally meeting some of you!

    January 5, 2013

    • Roger

Good seeing you guys again too. Maybe you'll join us again soon.

  • Bryon Paul M.

Lost the group, is there a gathering point?

    January 5, 2013

    • Roger

No, sorry. This kind of event is always difficult to keep up with everyone. Just like any bike night. Everyone goes off in their own direction.
I lost the people I was walking with a couple times too. Ya just gotta keep track of each other.

      January 5, 2013

    • Bryon Paul M.

No worries, it was my own fault as I left something with my bike and went back to get it. I ended up hanging out with Daniel for the rest of the afternoon.

    Country route for me

    January 4, 2013

  • Barry

Either route works for me. The Country route is a more open and condusent to that many bikes.

    January 4, 2013

  • Tammy G

Came here to RSVP but see it's closed (sad face). I guess we will work on getting up there with other riders or just Ray and me. Not sure, what is meant by women's butts need a rest?

    December 30, 2012

    • Tammy G

My bike is in the shop so Ray and I and the two friends riding with us are meeting at the shop to ride from there but they don't open until 9:30. We can't get to any of the MeetUp locations in time to catch the group. We will be there Saturday and Sunday, until the weather chases us home. I'd love to actually meet up with someone from this group, eventually, lol.

Thanks Roger. So we got two group now, let's keep both routes open and let the riders decide. The second group can follow a few minutes behind the first until we get to the Slipk not. We can go to different directions from there. Now we should have room for everybody. Come take a ride through the country with me...

    December 30, 2012

  • Bruce & Penny B.

Country Route for us. Maybe beach route on the way home.

    December 30, 2012

  • Dennis P.

I must have missed it somewhere.. what time is the trip back leaving Sarasota?

    December 30, 2012

  • Roger

Everyone, let me know which route you prefer; beach route or country route.

I will be meeting the group at the Slip Not and would prefer the country route.

Roger, I'll help Stan Jenkins with a second group if he wants some help.

    • Roger

      OK, Mike.

      December 30, 2012

  • Robert

SInce there appears to be two groups now---keep in mind if you go the country route there would be no problem with 30 bikes plus. As you near sarasota on Beeline road is where the traffic enters the picture--but even that won't be a problem with two group leaders

    1 · December 30, 2012

    • Stan Jenkins & Laurie M.

Good morning Robert, Roger has not yet confirmed that there will, in fact be two group. I think for safety reasons two group would be best. Riders can pick their route, and that should make room for everyone who wants to go.

      December 30, 2012

    • Roger

There's ALWAYS gonna be a "problem" with 30 plus bikes!!!

      1 · December 30, 2012

  • Roger

This event is closed to new RSVPs for now. It's getting too big to handle. If someone would like to volunteer to lead half of the group, let me know. Otherwise we're not gonna be able to all stay together on this ride.
The person that would lead the other half of the group needs to look at the map and KNOW how to follow it in case the two groups get separated.

If we can't get someone to lead a second group then this event is closed and no one else should show up.

    December 29, 2012

    • Stan Jenkins & Laurie M.

Roger, I can lead the second half, however I would prefer to take the country route. Let me know?

      1 · December 29, 2012

    • Roger

OK, Stan. You can lead a second group. We can either do two different routes or if almost everyone would prefer the country route, we can just all do that one. Personally, I prefer the more scenic, beach route.

      December 30, 2012

  • Barry

    Hey Roger,

Just saw this. RSVP closed but I intend to ride, weather permitting and be at F.M. H.D. That a problem? Also, I give up, what/where is KSU?

    December 29, 2012

    • Roger

      KSU = kick stands up

      December 29, 2012

    • Barry

      Duh!

      December 29, 2012

  • Bryon Paul M.

Sorry, I got confused and cancelled my RSVP by mistake, but I am still coming.

    December 29, 2012

  • Robert

X-means crossing the river--you ride along beaches all the time and it is a heavily congested area on Saturday-- plus most of the miles are on 41--the route I mentioned is through the countryside with curves and about the same distance--not much more to say---your call--I just don't like traffic when I can avoid it and it will be hard to keep a big group together in tarffic

    1 · December 27, 2012

  • Robert

Roger--you know this route and it crosses 41 only twice and is a nice ride---75 (To X river)769 to 760 to661 to 72 t0 bee ridge road ext-to bee ridge road to S osprey to McCleean to S ospry ave --then you are right in Sarasota--with no traveling on 41-your call, but that is my suggestion

    December 26, 2012

    • Roger

Don't believe I DO know that route! Don't know what "X river" is either. It also looks like it's gonna miss the scenic parts of the ride along the beaches...as far as I can tell.

      December 27, 2012

  • Robert

By the way, there is a nice country road way from Punta Gorda(and safer too) to get there eliminating 41 traffic if you are interested

    December 25, 2012

    • Roger

Absolutely! Send me details. But, I doubt it's gonna eliminate ALL 41 traffic.

      December 26, 2012

  • Roger

This is NOT an overnight event! As far as I know we are ALL coming back the same day!

    December 25, 2012

  • Bruce & Penny B.

Lora, we will definately be riding back to Ft Myers that day.

    December 24, 2012

  • Stuart & Linda S.

Last year's ride was up and back. Someone will definitely be with you on the road back. Just ask around at the morning meet-up and then you can set a time to head back. It's a couple hours up, a couple hours roaming the streets and then a couple hours back, (unless ya' want to ride like a bandit back down 75!).

    December 8, 2012

  • Lora N

I guess I am just wondering if there is anyone riding back to Fort Myers on the 5th or if you all spend the night there. I am new to all of this.

    December 7, 2012

  • Lora N

I can't spend the night... have some pets and don't have any pet sitters lined up... plus I haven't ridden on the highway at night yet. Rode to Sarasota by myself last month (Teddy Bear Run) but left there at 4:30pm so it was still daylight when I got home.

    December 6, 2012

  • Mike

I've never stayed overnight because I'm close to Sarasota but if there is a few folks that would like to make it a two day trip, I would give it a thought.

    December 5, 2012

  • Lora N

    Are you spending the night?
