Be ready to discuss our book at Panera Bread!

For this meetup, we'll be discussing two books about mail-order brides from Asia.  Both are pretty short.  They are: The Buddha in The Attic by Julie Otsuka and Shanghai Girls by Lisa See.    The Buddha in the Attic will be different, because it's written in the plural ("we").  It's about a bunch of mail-order brides from Japan around the turn of the century.  Shanghai Girls is more like a traditional novel (not written in plural) and is about two young Chinese sisters who are sold as brides to American suitors in order to pay off their father's debts during WWII.  If you don't read both that's okay-just talk about the book you read when we get to it.  It should be interesting to read these two different takes on a similar subject.  Both are available at the library, although there aren't many copies of Shanghai Girls there.  However, there are a couple copies available at paperbackswap.com.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
