Is this a history of Manhattan? Or just of its founding by white folks?

Sounds similar to the book "1491." Who were the orginal inhabits of Manhatta? What tribe?

Bill, it was the Wappinger Indians. Across the river in New Jersey were the Lenape or Delaware. Northern New York was the Iroquois Confederation consisting of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations. After the Tuscarora joined the confederation became six nations. Other tribes were subsequently absorbed (often after conquest by the warlike Iroquois, including one branch of the Wnedat (Huron) from Eastern Canada. To the East in New England were various Algonquin speaking nations including the Wampanoag, Pequot, Narragansett and Abenaki. There were a number of others but this is probably far more than you really wanted to know. :-)

I enjoyed listening and chatting with the other members and learned a lot. One member who is a direct descendant of the Dutch settlers had especially interesting comments. I look forward to the next gathering.

I haven't found a copy of the book but am gathering reviews/comments and so will hope to be able to participate in the discussion that way. Hope that's OK.

I would love to attend but the library's copies are all out, due back on the 20th! I'd prefer not to buy the book. Does anyone have a copy I can borrow or other suggestions?
