I great, unsung thing about Jefferson was that he kept us out of the War of 1812. That is, during his Presidential tenure from[masked] he slapped an embargo on British and French(?) to keep the US from being sucked into the Napoleonic wars despite war hawks pressuring mightily. But then when Madison became President we soon got into the war and it was stupid. Not as stupid as our invasion of the Middle East, but stupid enough.

I won't be there as I haven't had time to read the book, but I'm curious why Bill thinks Madison "was stupid." That's a curious thing to say about one of the drafters of the Constitution and a great thinker of his time. Please explain.

I have never been in a history book club before. As I'm reading, do you suggest I keep any certain focus? Are there questions that you like to discuss for this genre?

If you look in the "Discussions" section, there are two posts that speak to that issue..."GENERAL discussion questions" and "Themes to Think About." Also, given how popular this book is, there might be book club questions on line. If you find any, feel free to print them out and bring them to the meeting.

I just joined. Do you ever have your meeting any more north of Flemington, like Somerville? Just asking as I am in Morristown and this group sounds great.

We have members that come from as far as Basking Ridge and from the hinterlands of Pennsylvania. It's not convenient for everyone, but it seems to be the only history book club around. I hope you can make it.

We also sometimes do "field trips" which might be more convenient for you.
