Enchanted Rock (errrr... Garner State Park) Bike Campout

OK, looking at the Doppler and hourly forecasts for where we would be riding, I think 1:00 will work.  I have revised the route to keep us out of the North (where it will be wet) today.  The easter and norther you go the more wetter you get.  West looks dry and temperate.

Here is the new route:  http://goo.gl/maps/DJt3b

The diciest part will be getting over to the NW side of town in San Antonio.  It will likely be wet until after you pass I10 on 1604.  I drove out to the Valley Mart this morning and the streets were drying out.

Rain... Crap.  Putting off the start time till 1:00.  Lets see if it clears.

Enchanted Rock had only 40 or so sites and apparently they have been long sold out for the time I picked.  On to Garner as the overnight, where there are plenty.

I have to buy the sites on line with an account and they will cost a minimum of $22 for two.  Each site will hold two tents.  All have access to water, bathroom and showers. I will buy one for everyone signed up tomorrow morning (Friday, March 7th) at 10:00 a.m.  If you are still on here as going, you owe me.  Just remember what I do for my daytime job if you think you will skip on the $.

The ride will be long on Saturday, starting at 9:00 a.m. and 1/2 day on Sunday ending before lunch.  We will eat out for lunch and dinner on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday.

Bring a snack to share with 12 people for our cracker barrel on Saturday night. Or, just buy it at one of the many stores we will stop at on Saturday.

What if you had to carry everything you were camping with on your bike for an overnight except food?  What if we rode around the hill country for a good part of the day Saturday, had a good lunch and dinner at restaurants and camped out at Enchanted Rock until Sunday morning?  Then, we stop off for breakfast somewhere on the way back.  Could you strap it all on your bike and make it stay on for two fun hill country rides?  I am willing to try.

Sunday Route:  Coming (getting back before lunch) Oh... and no cages!

Had a good time this weekend. Thanks to Ed for setting it up, Noble for showing us how to "over pack", and Mike for the lesson in single malt consumption. Met some new "to me" folks. We'll definitely need to do some more of these.

Great weekend at Garner. Made some new friends, enjoyed the company of some old friends, and did it all on a motorcycle. Good stuff.

Ed, try to keep your "campers" to one side of the meeting place. I don't want my beautiful people to be chased away by your hobos.

The garbage man calling the campers "Hobos". Yeah...right.

Looking at the doppler map for the hill country today, it looks like it will be sporadic, although light rain throughout our traveling route all day. Looking bad. Unfortunately, San Antonio is just going to get worse as the day goes on. Any suggestions?

    March 15, 2014

    • Keith

Yeah..... we knew it was going to rain. 4 already here.

      March 15, 2014

Well... Texas weather! Raining this morning. Trip is put off until right after lunch. 1:00 p.m. same place. I will try to thread us around rain, but if it keeps on going, we will cancel.

Weather north and east of San Antonio is temperate and dry. Let's hope we miss rain tomorrow morning when we leave. It's a go.

Garner is right by there. Maybe breakfast, then Sisters. I'm easy.

      March 13, 2014

My first camp out in many years. I have gear, but it;s old and was used when I had a trailer, so it is not very compact. I'm in the market for a good used packable tent and at least one sleeping bag. Also a 3/4 length thermarest pad.

    • Hank

Go to Academy; they have a 7x7 tent for around $12 that packs in a small bag.
I also got an air bed with a 12v pump.
and a sleeping bag to use as a mattress pad.

    you guys enjoy GSP.
I'm doing a small trip there 3/21-23, with Austin Motorcycle Campers, so tell us all about it.
    Good luck and happy camping.

I did a solo 3500 mi round trip with no saddlebags, just what I had strapped to my sissybar. Spent my 59th birthday on the road riding the last 300 mi with a flat front tire and broken rotor. And I'm a chick! If I can carry gear on a 3500 mile ride and sleep on a bench, I know all Y'all can do 24 hrs. (She says throwin down the gauntlet)

Eight reserved. Hmmm.... at 10 I will reserve the site at Enchanted Rock. I will limit the ride to 20 though.

I love motorcycle camping! I haven't done it on the FJR yet. This comes at the end of my spring break and I don't know where I'll be or what I'll be doing yet. For now I'm in!
