This Meetup is cancelled

This Event IS CANCELED --(Read Below) KAYAK SELF RESCUE PRACTICE -

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Hi Everyone,

    This event is  cancelled  because so many of you are indicating some kind of sickness or weakness to get in your boats, more than half of you are not really participating in the "IN THE WATER" part which is really the most important.

    Observing is OK but ???.. then you waite for   two or so hours being bored to death watching things.

    I have no idea if anyone has any safety equipment to make this a worthwhile event. (Paddle Float and pump for the most basic self rescue items)..

    If you do not have these things why bother with this event ?

    Are your recreational kayaks equipped with for and aft flotation support ?

    If not you will just sink and not be able to get in.

    I only have 3 paddle floats and 2 pumps for you to use.. (Probably not enough to go around)

    Only one paddle is made for first timers with an additional steel bar in the middle so you won't snap it in half..

    (Not using the expensive Werners for this)..

    I will decide Monday night or Tuesday if i cancell this self rescue event.

    Sorry to those that really want to learn.. You will have a chance on every event from now on in the real life situation(s) or by the shore where we stop and have our snacks  to practice in real ocean waves..etc.. During those times I can spend more time with you individually.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Look how EASY it is to do a paddle float entry if you are alone :(provided you have a hand operated bilge pump and paddle float)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyoT0ylenvU

    If someone is around-- look how fast you can be paddling again using this technique:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YieGhgb8fBM

    The heel Hook re entry is good for most fully capsized and in the water paddler ready to get back in.

    Best to just practice it in the real, directions are too confusing.

    http://www.kayakpaddling.net/txt/html/safety_basics-heel_hook_rescue.php

    Cowboy entries are very difficult in thin and long ocean kayaks but possible if you practice it a lot.

    Rolling is the best of all..BUTT--too intensive to do on this event, you can take special training to achieve rolling.

    --------------

    No real need to RSVP or comment at this time (but you can if you want to).

    This is only a PROPOSED date based on the historic water and air temperatures at Bolton Lake, i do not want you in cold water since you will be in there for a good while--

    if the weather is OK its Saturday,

    as always Sunday may be the back up day if its not weather appropriate enough.

    Remember--> After this weekend -- its the start of the Ocean Events since you can now self rescue.

    You practice in your own boat to see how easy or hard it is and learn its characteristics.

    You are going to need it out in the deep when we paddle the 40 Mile River to the CUBA beach the very next week.

    ---> Its that time of year to Practice Self and Assisted Rescues.

    Especially Important prior to our OCEAN EVENTS and for your own good any-time.

    Weather:

    http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?Submit=Go&sta=KHFD&state=CT

    This event will have you practice Paddle Float Re-Entry and some assisted rescues with each other.

    If you have a paddle float and bilge pump, bring it,

    If you do not have them, its good cheap insurance especially if you paddle alone.

    I am always surprised to see how many never heard of a paddle float or pump and they are in deep waters paddling along blissfully..

    Good Luck

    I hope God is merciful to you for being an uninformed dufus..

    Obama healthcare is not going to save you or be nice to you when you are all full of water and fish bite marks all over your discoloured bloated body, they cut you up into little pieces then so you can fit in the trash can.

    TYPICAL KIT IS LIKE THIS:

    http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/59450?productId=998702&subrnd=0&qs=3016887_pmd_google_pla

    They come in a simple rescue package (pump, paddle float, sponge and maybe a whistle and other good things from Dick's and other places or just buy em separate, you choose.

    ---

    Wear fast draining cloths because you will get completely wet..

    Have some dry clothes and your food ready for the Pot luck BBQ afterward.

    This year i will have a working portable warm water shower set up so you will be clean for the BBQ if you want to use it ----> or you can stay with the Lake Fresh Scents and attract the flies and mosquitoes away from the Pot Luck food table to you instead ;-)

    -----------------------------------------------

    Getting to the Boat Launch area:
    There is a easy to reach boat launch right off of rte 44 in Bolton that has plenty of parking and Porto Toilets.

    Further to the east on the lake is a beach area that would be an excellent place to sit in the sun .

    Directions: to the boat launch.

    Use the apx address for your GPs to get you close enough:

    #1050 Boston Tpk Bolton CT

    From the Hartford Area:

    Take Rte 384 heading East to Bolton Notch

    Continue on Rte 44 E , take the left part of fork ...where the road splits (44/6)

    Landmark: There is a traffic light with a post office and a small shopping area to the right, continue to the next light.

    The next light has the boat launch to the left and a church to the right. (South Street intersection)
    Enter the boat launch area to the left if heading East.

    PLEASE LEAVE THE LAUNCHING CIRCLE OPEN after unloading AND PARK ON THE DESIGNATED SIDE AREAS, the DEP cops show up all the time it seems. They are looking to make LOTS of easy money to bring back to the BOSS Malloy.

    If you need help during unloading we will always help you -- but we always don't know if you need help,   so ask anyone to help you if you need it.

    I also will have a kayak transport wheel thing to make transport easier if needed..

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    THEN JOIN US FOR THE SOCIALIZATION TIME AFTER AT THE  POT LUCK BARBIE-Q NEARBY. This info will be added closer to the event day and or given out at the event.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I will do a Recreation Kayak vs Compartmentalized Kayak demonstration with one of your recreational boats so you will understand the need to be careful for this event and all of the seasons we will be paddling.

    Its mostly to illustrate what to buy so your future will be safer.

    Don't buy JUNK kayaks, they sink and you will not get back in (but if you have one, flotation bags sure help).

    You don't want to be yelling "DEPUTY---HELP HELP SINKING IN THE CRICK MUD"...and no one is around but the muskrats and weasels waiting for you die.

    The Fat Deputy is eating Doughnuts the next town over talking about how kayakers stink up his water ways when they die.

    -------------------------------------------------

    Then its a POT LUCK BARBIE-Q NEARBY ( location added closer to the event day)..

    Bring your chairs and some unique food..

    DETAILS AND DRIVING DIRECTIONS/MAPS  will be GIVEN OUT AT BOLTON LAKE to the Potluck..Details still in planning.

    a) Last Years location, Andover.

    b) The old reliable Oak Grove Nature Ctr,  Manchester

    or

    c) The NEW ROSE FARM under the big Oak Tree Grove area,  Bolton.

    -----------------------------------------------

    KAYAKS AVAILABLE:  Most Likely i will bring all of them --> but put in the water the following 2 for the actual self rescue practice:

    ~~> Eddyline --  its easy to learn in this one.

    ~~~> The Greenlander Pro just to see if you are now proficient enough for a real sea kayak...
    I have the portable shower setup as i indicated if you are concerned, i just dont want flies in my beard while trying to eat food and hitching a ride to my stomache so i will shower.
    I dont know, you may die in here or out in the ocean,
    I have heard most of you have illnesses already and dont want to do this, well maybe i should cancel this dumb idea of an event and let ya all fend for your self ?
    I will decide later this week whether to cancel or not.
    See some of you on the ocean.
    Hi Dot and Everyone, Flurodone was added to controll alge 1 month ago and swimming closed for a few days then, and no catfish
    stocking.. i do not know if any subsequent dosing was done, with this weekend and Indian Notch open ?? Dont really know ? i assume kids will pee in the water and that may be just as bad?
    It looks like you all are going to die if you are a fungus being, or you will be rid of your athletes foot fungus on this event.
    If you have green teeth thay will be white after without a dentist visit ?
    Hey Al, I was at Bolton lake Friday and found out that they had
    sprayed/added chemicals late May to combat the algae problem they had last year. Nobody was in the water don't know if it's going to be OK
    How's the water temperature? I really want to go but I've been very sick this spring, asthma, whooping cough (!) and still on antibiotics. So I'm reluctant to get in cold water for very long right now. I've never learned self rescue, so this is important for me to be able to participate in group events this year. I do plan to go and at least observe what the techniques are.
      Just Watching is quite useful, if you fall in during a trip, its learn on the go and hope things go well (usually i or someone will just pop you back in) , if not then i just call the Coast Guard - but that means things ended badly.
      I'm in the same boat (no pun intended) Ann - sick spring. I'll attend and watch.
