This is a paddle event starting out with a grand view of the Atomic Boiler :

and riding the NUCLEOTIDE  to our destination of Harkniss Memorial Park for a few hours of park exploration and snack time in the shade or sun.

Our return trip to the BBQ part of the event , it will be on the return PEPTIDE because you will need some PEP to get to the food faster.

Once reaching the park beaching area **PLEASE PULL UP YOUR KAYAKS A SHORT WAYS PAST THE SOUTH OF THE Harkness Park OBSERVATION PLATFORM (RIGHT SIDE OF IT).

Avoid some of the waders area also...DO NOT LAND TO THE LEFT OF THE PLATFORM since Goshen Cove is a Restricted Preserve area ..

SWIMMING: Some of us can continue around to Waterford Town Beach next to Harkness for swimming.

Getting to the Boat Ramp :

We have to park carefully as space is limited to maybe 40 or so cars total here.

http://www.lisrc.uconn.edu/coastalaccess/site.asp?siteid=556

Directions apx 54 minutes from Hartford (if no beach traffic).

APX GPS address:  # 16 DOCK ROAD, Waterford, CT.

The Meetup* Link at the top of the page is OK and use its information to get there for your specific directions.

Directions From Hartford should look like:

Get onto rte 2 EAST go apx 20 miles to rte 11 South

SINCE IT IS BEACH SEASON AND THE TRAFFIC IS USUALLY ACCUMULATING A MILE OR MORE BEFORE the end of THIS EXIT.

I AM GOING TO SUGGEST TAKING EXIT #5 off of rte 11 for Witch meadow Rd.

Take a left on Witch Meadow Rd and at end take a right onto RTE 85.

Go apx 10 miles and under the Rte I-395 underpass then take the first right onto CROSS Road.

Take a LEFT onto rte 1 (Boston  Post Road) go apx 1.6 miles)

Take a RIGHT onto AVERY LANE  (rte 213) which turns into GREAT NECK ROAD go apx 2 miles

Take a right onto GOSHEN RD and go to end (Shore rd-Dock Road). Unload & Park on left in the parking lot

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The After paddling event Pot-luck BBQ location is JORDAN MILL PARK nearby.

This is a new BBQ area is nearby and fitting for our group to enjoy in peace.

Bring your chairs and good food..

SPECIFIC  GPS # 17 Trumbull Road Waterford --PULL INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND KEEP GOING STRAIT INTO THE WOODS.

General directions from the paddle site----

Head back to rte 213, take a left on Great Neck Rd, go north apx 1.6 miles then take a LEFT onto Trumbull Rd. (first left after train tracks).

Once on Trumball Lane (Go apx 0.2 miles) keep a keen eye out for another brown and white Long Island Sound public access sign posted on what at first glance looks like a private drive in-between #15 and #17 Trumbull Lane. Drive down this access road and you will find a wooded area, park carefully--al-r.

The following Kayaks come with top rated paddles and life jackets transported to the put in site but must be specifically chosen and reserved in advance:

Nice paddle. Not a lot of chop, except where waves were breaking along shore, but further out got to ride some shallow, wide swells. Very relaxing. Thanks, Al.

Yes a relatively short paddle distance but to a great destination and hike with many "features" to enjoy. Another great BBQ also.MMMmm.., Thanks to everyone that came out to make this another memorable event. Remember the Season is now "Half Way".. more nice places on the way but new kinds of events happen after the paddle season is done.

Kayaks don't have the right of way.. lest they be RIGHT in the way of an oncoming power-boat.

    July 16, 2013

  • Linda

Do I need a sea kayak? I paddle the Norwalk Islands with my smaller rec kayak with no problem.

    July 16, 2013

    • AL-r

I have NO restrictions on type of boats. However if you have self rescued in a rec kayak and know its characteristics in a bad sea conditions that is a big help, otherwise we rescue you and hope for the best.

      July 16, 2013

    • AL-r

Recreation boats should have a flotation bag in the front and back for the times you are alone and something bad happens but are not required in this group either, its just cheap insurance for your life so you can be safer.
