SUN MAR 30 -Watch The Freezing Cold Scantic RIVER RATS RACE & Home Potluck Lunch

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Hi Everyone,

Yes i am aware of the weather for Sunday, however; Please DO NOT use the forecasts of any weather when it is more than 2-3 days in advance of any event, i will check it LATE Friday and use Saturdays data to decide on how SUNDAY will go (or not go).. if necessary, SUNDAY mornings forecast will be more accurate for the time we are interested in..

If its been raining prior to the event, the racers will really be skill tested.

iF it is raining and not good we will find another activity if necessary.

Check the Prmoters Website for additional info:

This is a public event that is open for all to see and EVERYONE is invited to enjoy the riverside race observation by the Rapids.

Bring a comfortable chair and always wear warm clothes including woll socks, etc..for this event. Cheer on the Paddlers !

Jump on in the water  here if you feel like it, the ice is melting right before the race starts:

Its shorts and T shirt weather once the race activity reaches the finish line below:

PARKING: I PERSONALLY WILL go past the barricade on S. Maple st and PARK AT GPS APX:  91 POWDER RIDGE RD, ENFIELD CT, You can park where you like or fit,  additional info is at the bottom of this listing for alternate spots.

Bring something good for the Potluck Table  lunch buff-a afterward,

(no cheap Hut Dogs or junk stuff)

ANTHONY  SAYS "Homeless people wont even eat those things so why should we ? IF YOU WANT TO SEE A real Tasty Swinging  BIG Wiener Schnitzel   IN MY HAND, I WILL GLADLY SHOW YOU MINE"  .

POT-LUCK Address will be given out at the event by Anthony's hand out list.

---> My only limit for this event is mainly because  the POT LUCK location can not be overcrowded since it is a group members home nearby, I hope you all understand.

(when things warm outside in the next few weeks---its Pot Luck BBQ's on or nearby at sites where there is no limit)...

We may open it up to more people later but its difficult to predict right now(depends on a few factors) . So stay on the wait list and we let you know.

the above picture is  This is the spot we will be at.

See its nice and warm, you can jump in for a swim !

As with all the events in this group,  --> Everything depends on Good weather quality and ground conditions at the site wether to "GO" or not for an enjoyable social time during and after the event.

I will be wearing an "ORANGE HUNTING HAT " riverside @ the FINAL RAPIDS !  "I

Check Back closer to the week of the event for any updates or changes if necessary.

Look at the fear on the faces of the Paddlers, watch them take their last frantic breath of fresh air (not even enough time to scream) before going under the rapids right in front of your eyes , almost in arms reach from you.. Yeah you can also imagine the cold of the water filling their underclothes to a drenching ice bath..or if they pee their pants at that moment--its a shot of warm before the COLD ending ahead !........Cheer em on i say..

    Updates are being added:

---> Parking: some spots are nearby on a few nearby roads  (I will park at the Church or closer this year)   or just go past the blockade and try the local roads near the barn..but this is an alternate:

FREE spectator parking will be available at the staff parking lot of Fermi High School (corner of North Maple Street and Moody Road).  The free shuttle bus will provide spectators a worry free trip to and from the Powder Mill Barn on race day.  The bus will run from 11:30 am until about one half hour after the end of the race.

Come and enjoy the race, and don’t worry about finding a parking space at Powder Hollow.

Remember to bring a food item to help fill our canoe inside the barn for the Enfield Food Shelf.

Sounds really good Kerry. I'm still waiting to see if we are going to have this event before I prepare anything. I'm really looking forward to this; I hope it happens.

Hey Kathy and Barb. I went out to buy a fanny pack today; and I actually found one. It was the last one. Hey! I just realized I paid 10 bucks for it at the dollar store. Yup Durelle. You'll be fine.

I'm a volunteer for the day of the race and hope to see you all there! I do encourage all who are not bringing their boats to use the shuttle and leave the good parking by Powder Mill for those that will be soaked. The shuttle is pretty fast and roomy enough for us short bus window lickers.

You guys would have to have a wet jock strap contest to make this a fair contest.

The Hazardville Fire Dept. also said it will be on Sunday. They have to be there.

You are right, Tom. I googled it:

March 30 Scantic Spring Splash (downriver)
    11:30 AM Scantic River
Somersville to Hazardville, CT Distances: 5 mi, 2.5 mi Jeff Dynia

Folks I think the date has been changed to Sunday the 30th. This race is tough to search on because the don't delete the years before.

Thanks, Tom. I tried to call the Enf. rec dept. and naturally got a recording that had nothing to do with the Scantic event. Were you able to verify the Sunday date? -Lenore

My experience if you do not want to take the shuttle try the United Methodist Church of Hazardville on rte 190 (just past South Maple street going towards Somers- parking behind church is usually available . Also road next to Powder Hollow Barn you can park on road usually does not fill up -both are alittle walk.

At 5 weeks away, this is just a guess, but I will probably bring a salad, and a pot of something...maybe chili or a veggie dish, or turkey meatballs in mushroom marinara. I am bringing a hot thermos for myself while we sit out in the cold watching the spectacle.

I'll bring Spicy mac and cheese for the pot luck and something for the Enfield Food Shelf too!

I LOVE this event. The official kick off of our kayaking season. Bob, are you going to paddle this year?
