Hi hacks/hackers,

Through my position as Chair of Journalism Innovation at Syracuse University I've started a conversation with the Sunlight Foundation, which recently received a $2.1 million grant from Google.org for "municipal data" projects. You can read about the mission of their grant here: http://sunlightfounda...

I told Sunlight about our growing hacks/hackers organization and the members' interest in open gov / open data in Syracuse. They indicated they may be able to help us with a Hackathon, and possibly even sponsor it, if we can give them more definition about what we want to accomplish. They also have experience running these kinds of events and can help us plan it out.

There were a lot of ideas shared at our last meeting. Let's use the next one to map out a plan for what we, and others you may know in the area, can do together to help the inform members of the Syracuse community and make local government more transparent and accountable to citizens. Feel free to share ideas here in this Google group, too!

Sunlight has some great resources that can be used for free right now. Take a look at these tools and training materials:

Pretty cool stuff.

I also cross-posted this in our Google group. Not many have joined that group yet so we'll see which area people prefer to use and focus on that.

Sorry, here's a link to the Google group if you prefer to use that:

I'll approve you as soon as you sign up. I have it set up as a closed group to keep spammers out.
