Skiing in Japan (Myoko & Nozawa) next Jan/Feb

Hi Guys, a group of friends (ex-instructors and even an Olympian) have formed a not-for-profit ski tour group called Discovery Snow Tours, and we have been taking groups skiing in Japan for years - the powder snow is epic!

If you are interested in coming with us next year (Jan 25th to Feb 2nd) let me know, visit our website (www.discoverysnowtours.com) or check us out on Facebook.

It would be great to have more folks from HK on our next tour. I live in DB and work in Central so happy to meet and discuss what we do.

I am a very privileged person who has worked & lived in Japan for over 10 years, and Nozawa is one of the few places that I have never been to. Simon, I have been to Zao at least 4 times, that is why I am not that willing to plan another trip there in the near future.

Understand Cindy ... If you are an advanced skier, you should check out our 2nd week tour to Hakkoda - all back country off-piste.

      Hi simon,
How you comment the snow quality and landscape among those ski resorts in japan?

      October 31, 2014

    • Simon K.

The snow quality is fairly much the same across Japan. The best snow quality I have found though is at Hakkoda and Ashidake, but almost anywhere is amazing snow.

Somehow I'll end up skiing solo in Nozawa around Christmas this year. Looking forward to my first trip in Nozawa, as even if the snow quality may not be the best, there is still onsen.

Why you choose ski in Nozawa? Not other places in japan?

      October 31, 2014

    • Simon K.

Hi Cindy. Nozawa is a wonderful town with amazing onsen. The ski season really does not really get going until late Dec (unless you get lucky). Dont forget to go visit the snow monkeys !! We will be heading to Zao Onsen the first week of Feb if you can change your dates.

Thanks to everyone who got along to the trip to Japan, we had an amazing time.

Also picked up a few days at the very very snowy Hakkouda mountain range and got in some amazing back-country (drop me a line if you want some more info).

Thinking about doing a quick weekend to ChongLi in China before then end of the season - or maybe a 4 day weekend back in Japan ......

    Where to meet

    January 24, 2014

  • Cruise

I am a snowboarder, I just want to find out whether your trip are all skiers

    December 27, 2013

    • Simon K.

Hi Cruise. Yes we have both snowboarders and skiers in our group (and we teach both too). This year we had about 70% boarders, for the 2014 trip it's only about 20% boarders - changes every year.

I have been to Myogo Kogen last year and it was great if you are intermediate level or above, as it has got the longest run in Japan. I have already planned Rusutsu trip in Dec & another ski trip in Feb 2014, so could not make it this time. Since I used to work in Tokyo for >10 yr, let me know in case you need advice. Cheers. I have skied Nozawa a few times. Although the town is old the mountain is extremely modern. Loads of lifts all well connected (very little to no skating for snowboarders). Some amazing off-piste especially dropping off the side of the long Skyline run. Not a huge resort, but a great experience. And definately no uphill climbing (unless you are heading over the back of the mountain go do true back country with a guide - even then the summit lift gets almost all the way there).

Thanks for sharing this information, as it is really handy. I never expect that I will end up chatting about ski in Japan with a gaijin in Hong Kong. World is so small.
