Hacker News London meetup

We are excited to confirm the talks for the January event, as follows:

Andreas Klinger - Metrics Lessons Learned
Gordon Guthrie - Lean Software Production And Continuous Integration - from the $100m startup to the under-a-million startup
Linsey Willaford - Finding your ideal teammates
Imran Ghory - Terrible Pitching: How To Scare Away Friends, Family and Strangers
Steve Graham - Twilio

Also, we have a 10% discount for the next Lean Startup Machine in London on 3rd Feb, for the first 10 people booking. Lean Startup Machine is a competitive weekend workshop where you will learn how to apply Lean Startup techniques in the real world. Join a team and launch a startup--not by writing code--but by validating and iterating your key hypotheses quickly. Bring your team, come alone to pitch an idea, or work on someone else's.

The first 10 members of Hacker News London to purchase tickets get a 10% discount! Just e-mail [masked]. (http://theleanstartup...)

The Twitter hashtag for the event is #HNLondon

The London Hacker News Meetup is sponsored by these generous companies:

LShift is a hi-tech software development company. It is small but, we like to think, close to perfectly formed. Our company is home to some of the best developers in the UK – not only in our opinion, but in the opinion of a number of international blue chip companies who use our development and research skills.

LShift is looking for senior developers. The company is built around the idea of having a team of highly skilled developers who combine a breadth and depth of outlook and experience. We do not recruit people to slot into a particular technical role with a particular set of tools. Instead we recruit all-rounders, familiar with a broad range of technologies and environments who have a good appreciation of all aspects of software engineering. www.lshift.net

Twilio, the cloud communications company, provides software developers with simple APIs that enable them to programmatically make and receive phone calls and text messages. Twilio is simple, powerful, and with pay-as-you-go pricing you pay for only what you use. Learn more at Twilio.com

TIM Group, a London financial software house that's hiring now! Commitment to developer learning and quality. Language agnostic. Innovating in automated testing. Fortnightly releases. Visit http://www.timgroup.c....

Forward. Ever wondered how users engage with your site, where they get stuck or how long they spend making choices? Forward Technology's upcoming form analytics service Inform can help you answer all these questions and more. Without any configuration Inform allows you to quickly build up a strong picture of what happens when real visitors interact with your forms. Come and talk to us at the HackerNews meet up to find out more or visit http://inform.forward... for beta access and updates.

Songkick.com is a Y Combinator startup (s2007) making it easy to track your favourite bands so you never miss them live. Some of you may recall some early Hacker News meetups we ran out of our flat in Spitalfields back in 2007-2008 (here are some blurry pictures ). We're pleased as punch to be getting involved in Dmitri and Ben's new meetup : it's excellent to have London HN-ers meeting together regularly again..!

I left after the first three talks. The first was a very cool tech demonstration. The second One was abysmal. The third wasn't much better. I heard the later ones were much better.
All could have benefited from some rehearsal and preparation at the venue itself.

The videos should be up by tomorrow in the usual place - http://vimeo.com/hnlondon

Will the presentations be available on Vimeo as with previous events?

Again, we need to work on initial layout for chatting/socialising/etc, it gets far too crowded round the food (duh!) but leaves no room to mingle!
Suggest back corner 4 rows of chairs are stacked in a row.

Late start, the talks seemed to drag on a bit (too many questions), and problems with sound levels... but, fantastic to have such a big regular event of this kind that is free with lots of drinks and pizza.

  • Robert Fenton

Fantastic turnout not just in numbers but also in quality. Also plenty of food and drink to go around. The only (hopefully constructive) criticism would be that the talks went on a bit long and would have much rather have had more time to meet and chat with more people.

Great meetup - good food, talks and interesting people, will definitely attend again!

The event had good range of speakers. But not enough time to meet new people, maybe badge for attendees will help to identify people.

  • Anthony Evans

A bit disappointed at the amount of background chat during the presentations.

    Interesting subjects & speakers.
The additional ~1/2hour delay allowed for additional networking.
    +1 Drinks, -1 Pizza, +1 Location

Good content, but started way later than 6:30 - watching someone tune a projector for 45 minutes was somewhat soul destroying :)

  • Eugene Blake

i thought it was absolutely fantastic and met some amazing minds

    January 26, 2012

  • Nick Swan

    Last 2 presentations were good.

  • Nick Boyce

Thanks to Dmitri and everyone who organised this! I wonder if there should be a more strict time limit on talks though? 10 mins, with 5 mins for questions?

    January 26, 2012

  • David Dulson

Twilio demo was excellent. Ran out of pizza which was sad. Venue not ideal for networking.

Hey guys, we're a VC backed startup looking for a strong java all rounder, check out http://www.seedcloud.com/java-t... . And for office space, to get going, you could consider http://www.centralworking.com/

Should've said: We're using a subreddit for the forum, so to add you, you need to email me your reddit username and give me some idea of what you're working on. I'll add everyone working on something, that simple.

@LIAD Drop me a message, can't DM you on HN. Or see me tonight.

    Re: forum

Myself and a couple of other friends who are working on startups, concluded that the biggest advantage that YC gave it's members was the alumni network.

So we created our own: http://www.reddit.com/r/hermeti...

"A members-only entrepreneurs' club that aims to create a community of entrepreneurs for help, support, feedback, etc."

It's currently empty, and you *MUST* be working on a startup, "For those who have problems and can solve problems.".

@LIAD - I can help you with the iOS and Android development studio.

    @Seena - I can help you all three (a, b & c).

See you (and everyone else) tonight. But if you don't find/see me, you can reach me here rob(at)robertfenton(dot)net.

  • Arush Sehgal

I agree with Seena we need a forum like this to help each other out. After a few of these events, I've found the major diff between UK US is not just VC funds, it's entrepreneur attitude. Valley startups help each other, UK startups hate on each other.

On that note, if know a shit hot Magento dev and would like to be employee #3 of an awesome startup with traction, made by men, for men, holler at me: getbrandid.com

    Thanks

While we're putting out requests (and I find this is the best community for good answers...): Funded London web startup seeks a) Zend Framework developer b) Web designer c) Office space (if you know of spare desks going). Thanks all.

    Great, thanks :)

    January 24, 2012

  • Dmitri Grabov

    Should be around 7 :)

    January 24, 2012

  • Aisha

What time will the talks be starting at tomorrow's meetup?

    January 24, 2012

  • Dmitri Grabov

Hopefully not. We aim to hold the meetup on a Thursday late in the month, however it depends on the school hall availability. Also, we have some big name speaker coming soon and we may work around their schedule, which might also change the schedule.

will the change to Wednesdays be a permanent thing?
