#HODR - The Next Mobile Challenge

What:

They’ll tell you not to reinvent the wheel. We say now is the time!

Although it seems like just yesterday that we started designing mobile apps, we’re already finding ourselves in a rut. Design patterns like in-app purchases, content drill-downs, social sharing and more have become a little stagnant. Vitamin T in conjunction with ADMCi is putting together a panel of expert mobile and product designers to challenge some of these patterns. After a vibrant discussion, we’ll break out into teams for a massive jam session to question and reconstruct specific design patterns. After, we'll discuss our findings as a group with the panel.

So, be ready to get your hands dirty! Drinks and food will be provided throughout to keep us fueled.

Who:

Will Hacker is the author of Mobile Prototyping with Axure 7. He's used Axure for several years as part of his iterative design and prototyping process. Will spent two and a half years working exclusively on mobile design, prototyping, and usability testing at Cars.com, and Axure was one of the main tools in his arsenal. He also has written about prototyping and user experience design for Smashing Magazine and UX Booth, and is a frequent speaker at design events in Chicago. Will is a Lead Interaction Designer at GE Capital.

Dan Leboeuf specializes in the mobile user experience as a the Director of Strategy and User Experience at Fueled, Inc. He leads in the creation of native mobile apps for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, as well as the development of web applications for device-agnostic solutions. Dan’s background is a hybrid of design and development, and his passion is constructing mobile prototypes and testing them with users.

Hoa Tran is passionate about developing and marketing new technology products. She is currently VP of Products at Total Attorneys. Previously, she held product leadership roles at SaaS and software companies, including Symantec, Tealeaf Technology, and Zone Labs. During her career, she led product development, marketing and cross-functional teams from product concept through global launches. Her industry specialties include real-time management of user analytics and global internet security.

Shanon Marks is Acquity Group’s Creative Director and Storyteller. Shanon has led award-winning creative work for more than 15 years. His distinctive approach to problem solving, combined with an insatiable curiosity and passion for innovating, has resulted in breakthrough client work across industries and technologies.  The Founder of Made Boards, and the creator of the world’s first 3D printed surfboard, Shanon was recently featured in FastCompany's "Most Incredible 3D Printed Things We've Ever Seen", as well as The Guardian, Mashable and The Chicago Sun Times.

Dennis Kardys is a Chicago based user experience designer with a hang up for well crafted code. As Design Director at WSOL, Dennis leads a team of vagabond designers in helping universities, hospitals and corporations alike take the plunge into mobile and responsive design. His affinity for mobile UX and prototyping can be seen in Smashing Magazine's The Mobile Book as well as the soon-to-be-released Mobile Web Triage. When he's not busy drawing with clients, evading meetings or squinting at markup, you're likely to find him ranting on twitter as @dkardys, or writing about design and ethics at robotregime.com.

Chris Ina has developed a passion for all things design; constantly asking "why is [blank] designed like this?"  Working for Walgreens Health Services, Chris developed user interfaces that would increase the use of self-service tools online, while decreasing call volume to support center and assisted in the creation new digital collateral.  For the past 2 years Chris has focused heavily on Mobile and Responsive Web Design.  He also continues to be involved with the Chicago design community.  Chris is currently a User Experience Manager at Manifest Digital.

Really insightful thought discussion, excellent panel of experts, and the acoustics of AKTA studio are really good - so good it was a little hard to hear within my individual group discussion over the sound of other groups / recruiters. Good times, though, I look forward to more from the group.

Glad you enjoyed the discussion and we do realize it was difficult to hear. We made note of that for future events. Thank you for your feedback. We greatly appreciate it and welcome comments to help make events event better for the attendees.
