Allegheny Trail (map)
Departure: For those of you coming from tidewater and eastern Virginia I suggest we gather in Williamsburg so we can car pool. I am asking you to be at my office parking lot by 3:00PM Thursday evening so we can leave by 3:30PM or shortly thereafter. My office is 427 Franklin Street, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. If you use Map Quest or another mapping program it should give you good directions. Once inside Williamsburg on Lafayette Street turn onto Botetourt Street. Go one block and turn left onto Franklin Street. On the corner is a church. The next building is my office building. Between the church and the office building is a gravel parking lot on the left. Pull into there.
Directions: We will take I-64 west picking up anyone in Richmond at the commuter lot at exit 173. We will take I-64 to I-81 north to US250 west towards Durbin, WV. If you are coming from northern Virginia you need to take I-66 west to I-81 south and then there are several ways to get there. If you wish to meet me somewhere give me a call.
Thursday Night: We can either stay at a motel or camp near the trail.
Friday: On Friday we will park the cars at Durbin and shuttle to Red Creek and begin the hike south.
Saturday - Monday: Each successive day we will hike 15 to 20 miles a day and camp as shelters are not available. On Monday we will hike to the cars and head for home.
The Hike: You need to know how to read blazes. This trail is not always well marked and it has a great deal of ups and downs.
Weather: We go regardless of weather. Go to Weather Channel and look up Elkins, WV. Subtract 10 degrees for some idea of temperatures.
Water: It is available each day at one or more places. All water should be filtered and treated.
Shelter: There are no shelters so plan to bring a tent or tarp. Privies are non existant so plan accordingly.
Other: It is assumed you know what kind of gear you need to bring but if you have any questions please give me a call. We practice Leave No Trace so whatever you pack in pack it out. Because this is an agressive hike on a difficult trail I would not bring dogs. Older teenagers are okay as long as you are responsible for them. There may be costs for a shuttle service.
If you have any questions give me a call.
