HTML5 CodeShow London #5

Hi everyone, we are really happy to announce this fifth London HTML5 CodeShow!

The principle of this edition is that the speakers are going to develop in live, but you are also going to help them!

Two speakers will be present :

Available technologies and librairies to create fast-performing games on mobile devices
by Peter O'Shaughnessy (@poshaughnessy)

Now that WebGL is supported in the upcoming IE11, it will be viable for many more developers to create fast-performing games and 3D animations for the desktop Web.

But what about mobile? Is it possible to use Web technologies to create such experiences on mobile devices?
I will run through some of the available technologies (WebGL, CSS3D, Canvas) and librairies (Three.js, Pixi.js, Phaser).

Realtime coding across multiple devices
by Ashraf Samy Hegab (@ashcairo)

In this session, I will present a novel technique on how to deploy code changes line by line across iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Web based platforms. No re-compilation and no appstore update, just save and it's deployed. We will go through the high-level HTML5 based hybrid architecture, and then dive in and create and publish a 3d multiplayer game together.

We are happy to be hosted by Google Campus, the event is free and food and drinks will be provided as well.

Here is a quick presentation of the fourth HTML5 CodeShow & here are the hashtags you can use : #HTML5 #CodeShow #London

Hey guys, this is Ash; the guy that presented the real-time dev platform at this meetup.

Recently, launched a campaign to help our dev efforts. If you guys could be so kind to spread the word and pledge a $1, it'd be very much appreciated.

    Quick follow-up for anyone interested:

In the Q&A, I was asked about the difference WebGL makes. I said I hadn't noticed much difference when I tried the Pixi.js BunnyMark on Chrome Beta (with WebGL) versus Chrome (without) on my Android device. But I thought that was a bit weird, because I expected it to make a decent improvement... I just asked Mat Groves, the developer behind Pixi.js, and he said it depends a lot on the device. It could be to do with the graphics chip, or it could be that the bottle-neck is the speed that JS is able to run.

Others have posted their own results here:

    There's a couple of particularly impressive mobile/tablet results at the bottom: 1700 bunnies @ 30 FPS on a Nexus 7, and 5580 bunnies @ 30 FPS on a Blackberry Z10!

So, I'd say we can expect there to be a big difference in what we're able to achieve on mobile devices, when more of them support WebGL (and the graphics chips inevitably get better too).

Thanks everyone, it was great to meet you all. For anyone interested, my slides are up at: And the code is on GitHub at:

p.s. I figured out what I messed up on the 2nd live code example - I needed just THREE.Color(colorHex) not THREE.Color({color: colorHex})! (Dur!)

I'm the lead games developer for a gambling company in London. I'll soon be interviewing candidates for an html5 position going at our company so I'm interested to learn more about pixi and similar frameworks, and maybe meet a few candidates too! :)

Hey Alexandre, thanks for letting me know. I'll try to attend if I can fit it in, am very busy at the moment! I ended up having to leave the code show part way through because of an important phone call but I'll be attending the "find a tech job in london" meetup tomorrow and hope to find some good people there! :)
