JasmineQuery and Object Oriented JS - #9 HTML5 CodeShow London

Save the date for the HTML5 CodeShow London 2014!

The first CodeShow of the year will be on January 20th starting at 7pm. To celebrate this opening, I would love to see all of you at Skype’s HQ.

Do you work with jQuery? How do you test your work? Manual testing can be time consuming and unreliable. Is unit testing the answer?  Won't that just slow us down more?

If you are asking yourself the same questions I invite you to attend Mat Carey’s presentation.

" In this session we'll be looking at how JasmineQuery can help.  We'll be exploring how it  can make your life easier whether you're a regular TDDer or never written a unit test before. "

In second part, we will have a talk on "Object Oriented JavaScript" by Marco Bettiolo.

"We will start with simple but effective concepts like the Module Pattern and progress to more complex aspects like Constructors and Prototypal Inheritance. We will cover tools like JSDoc that helps collaboration in teams and design time intellisense."

Feel free to bring your friends and colleagues and share your experiences with our HTML5 community. You can poke on @KtKellyTran if you have any questions.

And a HUGE thank you to Skype for hosting us and providing pizzas and beers.
Cheers :)

Kelly

It was really interesting hearing more about common patterns for OOJS. There's one question that I forgot to ask. It seems like the prototypal pattern has a lot of performance benefits (with the methods not being saved on the instance). However, it seems to be quite uncommon, or at least in the libraries and other code that I use I don't see it very often. Anyone have an idea why?

Wildsurf, actually it is used in various opensource projects, this is the source code of three.js which is a 3d library for javascript and it extends their own object's prototypes: https://github.com/mrd...

Thanks for the link, that looks like a nice and clear way for setting up JS objects, I like it.

Thanks everybody. That was my first meet up and was really interesting. Thanks to Skype for hosting us too.

Mat was really interesting with JasmineQuery, and Marco explained exactly what I needed to know in JS OOP. His talk was maybe a little bit unstructured but I just could pick the information I needed without any trouble.
Thank you very much for this great meeting.

You can re-watch or share the JasmineQuery talk at http://www.steward-digital.com/JasmineQuery

And I'd like to leave you with a joke:

A programmer was going to the shops, his girlfriend said to him "please get me a loaf of bread and if they have eggs get 6". He came back from the shops with 6 loaves of bread - his girlfriend questioned "why did you buy all that bread?" He looked puzzled and replied "because they had eggs of course".

I hope that JasmineQuery helps you to clarify your requirements and build applications that really do what you want them to do.

(the video of Object Oriented Javascript will be provided soon)

Thanks Lynette, I'm trying to go round different meetups at the moment - if you 'like' Steward Digital on Facebook you'll see any announcements about future talks and articles. If you know any meetups that might want me to present feel free to suggest that they get in touch. https://www.facebook.c...

JasmineQuery was good to see, and nice to see someone go over a bit about OOP of javascript - both were interesting, some of course I knew but well worth the visit and to my first HTML5CodeShow, look forward to the next one - and a big thank you to Skype!

First of all this was my first visit to this meetup and it was well organized. I really liked the JasmineQuery presentation.

JasmineQuery, really interesting and exciting! I do agree with others regarding the Object Oriented JS not so interesting, but that could be the fact that i am not a really experienced JSer.
