Regarding your questions about generating "automatic" email reminders and Thank you's using EE can be done by integrating the MailChimp addon. This addon automatically adds registrants to a list and then you can schedule your emails using MailChimp. Regarding generating emails to attendees using EE's interface, other than the automatic email that is sent to a registrant as an auto respond, yes there is a way. And yes, I am using the pro version 3.1 :)
