Barrett Strausser will talk about Pig.

He'll cover

1. Writing Custom PIG UDF's in Scala

2. Testing Custom UDF's in PIG UNIT

3. Custom RecordReaders/LoadFuncs in Scala

4. Optimizations

5. At the end I'll use all the trouble we went through to motivate the use of Scalding.

Some announcements:

kWantera is looking for a Python programmer and Data Scientist. Talk to Barrett after his talk for more info.

SEI is hosting a job expo on April 11th and 12th. Register at  http://www.seiexpo.com/ You must register to attend.

Late Breaking NEWS -- we will have pizza to welcome Barrett's fine talk.  The PSC will sponsor the food.

[We will no longer have pizza and drinks at the meeting. It was getting expensive and people that were RSVPing were not showing up and we always had lots of left over food.]

If you know of any interesting Hadoop related jobs in Pittsburgh, send me an email.

Useful intro to Pig and justification for going to an even higher level of abstraction.

Could people comment with how much Pig experience they have? The talk now is geared toward having some exposure but I can refactor to start from an easier entry point.

Andy: Sorry you had problems. I had signs on the door with my cell phone. I hope you'll try for April. Don't hesitate to call the phone number if I'm not there opening the door. I usually start watching for people around 5:30. I leave my phone on during the meeting in case someone comes late.

I believe 300 S Craig is a CMU facility. Is there a different entrance to PSC?

Sahil: Yes. It is a CMU facility. PSC is part of CMU. Come in the main entrance on Craig Street. I'm usually there to let people in and post signs with my cell phone in case I walk away.
