  • What is Service Design?
  • How do we apply Service Design to Healthcare?
  • How can Service Design be... of service?

Bio: Tamsin is a Service Designer bringing 10 years experience from the UK where she has worked as a consultant on several service design projects across sectors. Clients including BBC, British Airports Authority, London Olympic Games, The Young Foundation, Southwark Council, E.ON and Eurostar.

What is service design?

There are many variations in definition, here is the Wikipedia one: Service design is the activity of planning and organizing people, infrastructure, communication and material components of a service in order to improve its quality and the interaction between service provider and customers. The purpose of service design methodologies is to design according to the needs of customers or participants, so that the service is user-friendly, competitive and relevant to the customers.

Check back for more details on this topic when it becomes available.

If this is your first HXD event, please introduce yourself to me (Jenn Kong) and at the beginning of the event we can do a welcoming of all new members!

Hope to see you there!

Good book spot Jason, I know these guys they've been shaping service design since the beginning in London. It should provide some great evidence of the practise and useful cases studies.

Rosenfeld media has a new book on service design coming out tomorrow that might be of interest:

It was great to hear about and see Tamsin's methods and tools for service design. I think that Tamsin's definition for "service design" is similar to how I would define "experience design" or "user experience design" -- not limited only to (the subset of) virtual UI/interface/interaction design, but encompassing the total experience and interaction of the 'servoid' with products, services and brand.

I agree! Looks like this was a popular theme among our network. I've posted in our Discussion Forum some of the questions we were hoping to discuss with you all after Tamsin's talk. Please check them out when you can! Thanks for the feedback and suggestions for topics!

Thanks so much for the positive comments guys, I enjoyed all the conversations after and suggest we have further topics on 'proving the value of design in healthcare' or 'how design thinking can lead to positive outcomes and metrics'.
I've shared my slides with you here:

Tamsin is a fabulous presenter. I left with practical tools I could use in my work right away, and I also left 'fired up' to change the world through service design!

    I thought it was great
Tamsin made quite a good presentation that I thought covered some interesting issues
It contained info from both past and present projects which I always like to see
Reason being is that it shows you a brief evolution of that persons processes throughout their projects, what works what needs to be tweaked
