What the hell does an art and design school have to do with healthcare?

To kick off the school year, we thought we'd put an educational spin on the next HXD Meetup!

We are honoured to welcome Jonathan Aitken, Director of the Health Design Lab at Emily Carr. Jonathan, we are all dying to know: What does art and design school have to do with healthcare? And how can we be a part of it!?

DESCRIPTION OF THE TALK:

The role an art and design school can play in solving complex problems in healthcare. Examples from recent projects will be shown to illustrate several collaborative partnerships.

SPEAKER BIO:

Jonathan Aitken is currently the Director of the Health Design Lab and Associate Professor in Communication Design at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. The Health Design Lab is is an emergent research centre that applies design thinking to Health Care, bringing human-centred design research methodologies to complex problems. Aitken's education in Communication and Industrial Design help him bring an interdisciplinary focus to his work. Currently teaching in the graduate and undergraduate programs, Aitken is particularly interested in how participatory design methodologies can facilitate design research into large, complex problems. As well, he has an interest in ebook design and is engaged in research and courses connected to that emerging medium.

Hope to see you there!

Congratulations Michaela -- I saw you at Eric Topol's talk last night, and it looks like I'll be seeing you again at Interface 2013 later this week.

And for anyone who does not yet have their tickets, they are still on sale, we still get an extra discount, and it still starts tomorrow.

For those meetup member who are attending, perhaps we could have an impromptu get together at the conference?

Awesome turn out and a very informative talk on the influence designers have on the efficiency of healthcare. It was great to be a part of the confluence of many key figures in the space of healthcare and design. Look forward to future talks!

This was such a great event. Thank you for your stellar presentation Jonathan and to Jenn and John for organizing. It was awesome to see so many folks engaged and asking questions about the roles of design in healthcare innovation.

Well done, Jenn. What Jonathan is trying to do at Emily Carr is super-awesome stuff. The healthcare industry seems to suffer from a serious design deficit, but it's a sure thing that it's destined to catch up. It takes real believers to get the momentum going, and events like this fire them (us!) up.

Nice presentation. Stimulated a lot of questions and conversation afterward.

A very interesting presentation on how design students, by looking at complex problems in Healthcare, can provide recommendations and solutions in a completely unfettered approach. Love it.

I'm psyched to see a lot of familiar faces have RSVPed, as well as some new members. But there are still quite a few folks from past meetings I was hoping to see again on the other side of summer. In addition to making me happy, you can get a discount on Michael's INTERFACE 2013, or even win a free ticket to the event.

(you can let Michael know his generosity is appreciated by liking his offer at http://www.facebook.com/sanotron)

Now don't make me track you all down and knock on your doors personally -- that would be creepy and its starting to rain. RSVP and you could walk away a winner!

Not only was Michaels even last year really good, it was right here in our back yard. If you are serious about playing a role in healthcare design this is exactly the kind of event you need to support and more importantly participate in.

Thank you John. I am glad you liked INTERFACE 2012. This year we have a better and bigger event. We listened to all the comments from last year's customer satisfaction survey and we believe we have created an event that is DIFFERENT than many health or health-care related conferences out there. I would love to see 30-40 designers joining the conversation on Oct. 9-10. I want the world to know Vancouver is a creative city with amazing designers.

How does the HxD Vancouver community feel about our new logo "homo digitus", our new website and the INTERFACE 2013 in general? www.interfacesummit.com John Trenouth asked me if Sanotron can offer one LIMITED PREMIUM OFFER as a prize at the meetup on Thursday, September 26. Check it out: http://interfacesummit.com/free-shine

If the community will ask for it I will definitely consider.

The vote from the community needs to be unanimous though. Can I get a raise of hands who "Like" this idea at www.facebook.com/sanotron? P.S. Btw, in my last post I forgot to say that Emily Carr is also a sponsor of INTERFACE 2013. Thank you ECUAD :)

Michael, I couldn't find the poll on FB -- So I just liked the whole damn thing.

      September 20, 2013

    • Michael B.

Hi John, my apology. I have the poll on our FB now. Maybe you or Jenn can reach out to the entire 132 members and tell them we'll have a draw for the free SHINE and a full summit pass at our meetup this Thursday. One lucky winner will join us for what promises to be the hottest event in town next month.

Can anyone fix my typo? It's missing an "an" ie should read "What the hell does an art and design school have to do with healthcare?"

    Typos make me crazy

Hey guys, happy to see Jonathan meeting with HxD members this coming Thursday. He is one of the big fans of design innovation in healthcare together with Ron Burnett, President of Emily Carr University for Art + Design. Can't wait to hear his stories. I hope the location is big enough to fit us all. Looking forward to it.
