Hack Night at Carbon Five LA

Welcome back from the holiday break!  We kick off 2013 with a hack night talk by Nathan Doctor and Jake Hoffner - the founders of CodeWars. (

CodeWars is a coding challenge site which was born out of Startup Weekend LA in July 2012.  Nathan and Jake will reveal their product-driven viral strategy that allowed CodeWars to top the charts on Hacker News.  This includes diving into their plan to open source pieces of their creation, as well as the technical underpinnings of how they support multiple programming languages in their Code Kata engine.

Of course we'll do our normal hacking after the talk.  So please join us and help us ring in 2013!

Doors open around 6pm and we'll keep hacking until 9pm (sometimes later). Bring your laptop and a project to work on. We'll provide the infrastructure, food, and beverages.

ps. If the gate in front of the building is locked, dial #3333 to buzz yourself in.

Great meeting you all last night! In case more folks wanted to contribute to the White House app challenge project Patrick and I announced, here's the info on the project again: We'd love for you to join our team in educating and encouraging girls to be leaders in public service. We're building a web-based interactive timeline app that features successful women leaders in social movements as well as political office. We want girls to see the leaders on the timeline as role models as well as inspirations.

Who we're looking for: Front-end developers as well as back-end developers who can code in Javascript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, and/or MongoDB. No worries if you're a male developer (we have a handful of guys on our team). It's a worthwhile cause, and the impact is even stronger when it's supported by guys as well.

If you or anyone you know is interested, let me know! We only have a few more days left to complete this app project, so any help is definitely appreciated. Thanks!

Is anybody going to and from downtown or USC? I am a USC student looking for a carpool kind of thing and am ready to share the expenses. Thanks.

I should be able to drop you back near USC afterwards. I'll be going by there on the way to Pasadena.

I thought that many of the people from hack night would be interested in SCALE, the Southern California Linux Expo (, which is held near LAX. It's a pretty cool smorgasbord of open technologies, from presentations, to workshops, to exhibition booths, key signing, free schwag, product reps, recruiters, etc. I think today is the last day for early bird registration, but if you're a member of any LUG email lists there might be discounts announced later. I've been a regular at SCALE even longer than hack night :) The SCALE reception has free beer too, so go figure (but only 2 drink tickets).
