Biodynamic Art: Creativity with Arduino

Purchase Tickets to RSVP for the four week class here: Biodynamic Art

Interested in making Art that combines creativity and technology?
Art that causes movement and awareness in the viewer? What kind of feelings do you want to stimulate in someone, when theyʼre looking at your art? What do you want to express with it? Use this class to learn to combine your creativity with your technological know how. Learn how to dream up an idea and implement it.

For this workshop, we will be using Arduino microcontrollers to bring more dynamic interaction to your artwork. They will be used to fire LEDʼs or maybe sound responsive circuits, depending on interest. This class is for beginners as well as those who are advanced either as artists or in technology. The art will be simple - weʼll be creating mosaics, paintings or small plaster sculptures (no skills required!) - and the technology will also.  (Additional lab time may be available for those wishing to create more involved art pieces or add more sophisticated technology.)

How Will The Class Be Structured?

Week 1
- Art project development - Conceptual design phase
- Requirements breakdown
- Logistics - What you will need, to build the system you've designed
- Some ideas on how to get the needed materials

Week 2
- Begin the project development - Hardware design & Initial construction phase
- Review available technologies
- Decide on a system design
- Begin assembling components

Week 3
- Review difficulties experienced during Week 2
- Continue assembling components
- Building techniques, how to develop what you've designed
- Begin final project development, integrating components

Week 4
- Complete final project development (integration of various systems into final piece)
- De-bugging systems design, circuitry testing
- Fine-tuning design, changes to system layout or design
- Peer review of system and how it works

Parts Kit Included
What you will receive as part of your class costs ($25 value):
- Arduino Pro Mini Module
- USB Interface to TTL Module
- Interface Cable
- 12 Multi-color RGB LED's
- 10 Bi-polar transistors
- 10 Resistors
- Battery Power Supply (Artists - These are the items you will need for basic implementation of light, sound or motion activated interactivity in your art pieces)

What Will You Get Out of this Workshop?

This workshop allows you to gain skills to create art pieces that interact with the basic human senses. Your works can appear Beautiful, Sensual and Spontaneous.

About the Teacher
My name is Steve Rabbon. I am also called Oso Tama, by my friends. I am a retired electrical engineer out of San Diego and the Silicon Valley. I worked for many years designing specialized circuitry and systems, including robotics, sonar system design, and aerospace/military systems design. I love helping people design systems that are functional yet beautiful, and really enjoy working with artists who want to incorporate technology into their artwork. My specialties are including light, sound, and other interactive response mechanisms into art pieces, using Arduino or Raspberry Pi processors. I can design circuits for almost any need, and love to come up with solutions to technical design problems (feel free to bring me yours!). I was a member of a "fast response" design team, who's job it was to come up with system-wide solutions in the shortest time possible. I love teaching others what I've learned, so they can come up with better designs.
