About Us:

HackerNest is a nonprofit community movement focused on strengthening local tech ecosystems globally through unpretentious social events and hackathons. We’re nurturing cohesive communities today to empower them with more relevant and accessible peer-based tech education tomorrow. How? We do this by cramming lots of smart, accomplished people into a room with free beer. Our relaxed, down-to-earth Tech Socials became Canada’s largest tech meetups in year 1 (now we're in multiple cities). Our membership - diverse and highly technical. Developers, designers, engineers, social media/business folk, entrepreneurs, investors, etc. gather regularly to socialize, talk tech, maybe hear a speaker, and meet future co-founders, employees, funders, and friends. Strict no-douchebag policy.

Great amount of people but too hot and a bit too crowded.

    October 1, 2013

  • Mike S.

The social part was nice, but I was hoping for some pop or juice instead of water since I don't drink alcohol. I also was hoping for more content in the presentation part as well as more business cards which would connect me to employers. Other than that, it was an interesting social event and something I would consider again.

so i was checking this site (meetup.com) and on the desktop page, the size for the main HTML content is over 700KB which is super large. On the mobile site (m.meetup.com), its like only 22KB. Its a good thing I have internet with unlimited bandwidth. I just thought I should address that, especially if anyone has limited bandwidth internet.

I'm in it for the LOLs too.
The free beer part makes me laugh too because I don't know anywhere where one can get free beer. I don't drink tho but thats not why I'm going.
I want to see what is going on with technology, and I'm hoping HTML5 will become a new permanent standard for all devices so that people don't have to write similar code multiple times for multiple devices.

  • Mike S.

I'm curious. are company shirts with no advertising allowed in the social?

    September 23, 2013

    • Brent S.

Wear whatever you like. It's all good. Would recommend staying away from spammy style shirt advertising. But repping your company is all good.

      September 23, 2013

    • Shaharris

...yeah, we don't control the way people dress. That said, if a bunch of non-sponsor people show up with bright neon pink matching tshirts and lots of swag, that's pretty bad form - and everyone will know that. (and disapprove)

Folks, do keep the job postings out of the event discussion threads - try sponsorship or the job boards - much cleaner that way: you'll get a more positive vibe at the Tech Socials, and we'll all have much less annoyed members! See you all soon! peacelove#nerdcore
