HackerNest Kitchener-Waterloo January Tech Social

Drinks on us. That's right: free beer/wine/water.

HackerNest Tech Socials
are a fun, relaxed way to connect with your local tech brethren. Atmosphere: chill, friendly, unpretentious, agenda-free (no sales pitch, yo), and brimming with UltraSmart(TM) people.

We believe that strong, supportive tech communities should exist everywhere - not just in hotspots like San Francisco and New York. In 2011, we started running Tech Socials in Toronto, where our monthly attendance grew to over 350+ technologists literally 100% from word-of-mouth.

The typical Tech Social schedule:
- 8:00pm: folks arrive, grab drinks, socialize
- 9:00pm: quick announcements, thank sponsors
- 9:10pm: back to chatting
- 11:00pm: go home!

Sponsors make this growing movement possible, so we treasure and build deep, long-term relationships with the companies that endorse us. We're always looking for new friends!

Sponsors ([masked]):

Kaboom Technologies: web and mobile development experts - always hiring talented talent!

Venue:

Thalmic Labs: creators of the MYO armband, a magical gesture control device

Wanna show off your office? We're always looking for big open spaces with 100+ (standing room) capacity that are easily accessible: [masked]

About Us:

HackerNest is a nonprofit community movement focused on strengthening local tech ecosystems globally through unpretentious social events and hackathons. We’re nurturing cohesive communities today to empower them with more relevant and accessible peer-based tech education tomorrow. How? We do this by cramming lots of smart, accomplished people into a room with free beer. Our relaxed, down-to-earth Tech Socials became Canada’s largest tech meetups in year 1 (now we're in multiple cities). Our membership - diverse and highly technical. Developers, designers, engineers, social media/business folk, entrepreneurs, investors, etc. gather regularly to socialize, talk tech, maybe hear a speaker, and meet future co-founders, employees, funders, and friends. Strict no-douchebag policy.

Hi - it was really nice meeting some of you that evening and at the previous meetups.

I am new to the KW area and it would be nice to jump into a new project. If I could offer my support to a startup in the areas of business management, GPG or retail strategies, please let me know. I am not looking to charge for this, but rather just to be part of something cool and techy in the local community. This is not a sales pitch - I have a day job. Please connect at [masked] or LinkedIn (brantbeckta).

    Thank you.

Looking forward to the March meetup.

For my 1st event, I have to admit to being very pleasantly surprised. Being 1 of the last to leave does tell one that I should derive a lot of benefit but I have to say it would be better if people were better prepared and brought some form of business card with them. If you're a student and looking for work - use the computer to print something with your name, e-mail address, phone #, etc. because some people may want to reconnect afterwards. If you're in business, bring adequate business cards so you don't run out. :) See everyone next month!

The Meetup site allows you to look up anyone you met and message them. This precludes the need for handing out business cards at the event.

Usman, you're partially correct there but some people don't register so a business card is useful for that person, correct?

Great to meet so many great people last night. As promised, BitcoinKW now has a real live meetup group. If you know your way around Bitcoin, or you're curious what it's all about, join us. It's fascinating stuff.

    All are welcome: http://www.meetup.com/BitcoinKW

Where is the venue, street view is a bit confusing. Are Thalmic Labs in the Tannery building or above the furniture store as Street view seems to imply.
