We're knee deep in a snowless winter here in Seattle, and after hibernating last month, the Hacker News Seattle Meetup is returning! The next event will be Tuesday, February 5th at 6pm at Makerhaus in Fremont.
What is Makerhaus? So glad you asked. It's planning on being one of the best Maker Spaces in the area. They have a studio environment, with a professional staff from diverse backgrounds in design, manufacturing, creative strategy, and business. There are wood and metal shops, a materials studio, 3d printers and laser cutters, copy machines, work benches, and more.
Mike Kemery, cofounder of Makerhaus, will be our speaker. He'll be talking about the "Maker Movement" and how, between the classes they're offering and the equipment they're making available, Makerhaus is hoping to unite meatspace and bitspace.
This event definitely wouldn't happen without our Premier Sponsor, Outlook.com. Microsoft has launched Outlook.com as their new, free email service and they’re serious about making it the best in the world, and that starts with getting input from users like members of the Hacker News Seattle community. In addition to providing a few other surprises, they're responsible for improving the quality of food at the event!
Thanks to Bit Titan, who provides cloud solutions that simplify and improve IT activities for businesses, governments, healthcare providers, and telecoms. Its globally recognized products include MigrationWiz, SmtpLogic and UserActivation.
And thanks to 9 Mile Labs. They're a B2B high-tech accelerator based in the Seattle area. They're running two 3-month programs every year, each with a group of 9 startups. Startups get an $20,000 stipend, well-equipped workspace, and access to a network of mentors who can help provide advice and connections. Their application deadline is Feb 15 and the first program starts on Apr 8... so apply soon!
One other note. I'll actually be traveling that week and won't be able to attend my own meetup. But! The show must go on. So instead of canceling it, I've brought on my good friend Gina Phillips. She's been running the super popular Green Drinks events, so she'll do a great job covering for me.
Have fun, everyone. Sad I'll miss this one, but glad you all will experience it for me. :)
