Hacker News Seattle Meetup 20

Next week, the Hacker News Seattle Meetup returns for #20! This time, lets get... educational! Tuesday, June 4th at 6pm, we'll be at Northeastern University (in Seattle!)'s campus in South Lake Union.

Our speaker this month is Mitch S
tein. As the head of Human Interface Technologies at Apple in the early 90s, he coined the term "user experience" when trying to explain to executives what Apple should be focusing on. He's flying up from the Bay Area (two non-Seattle speakers in a row!) to come talk to us and meet people in the Seattle tech community. If you're interested in meeting with him while he's here, email me ([masked]) and I'll connect you with him.

This event definitely wouldn't happen without our Premier Sponsor, Outlook.com. Microsoft has launched Outlook.com as their new, free email service and they’re serious about making it the best in the world, and that starts with getting input from users like members of the Hacker News Seattle community. In addition to providing a few other surprises, they're responsible for improving the quality of food at the event!

Thanks to Bit Titan, who provides cloud solutions that simplify and improve IT activities for businesses, governments, healthcare providers, and telecoms.  Its globally recognized products include MigrationWiz, SmtpLogic and UserActivation.

And big thanks to SEOmoz who develops
SEO software, provides a robust link intelligence API, and hosts the web's most vibrant SEO community. They love supporting local startup events, and they're also always on the lookout for engineers! Be sure to mention the Hacker News meetup if you decide to apply.

Invite your friends, invite your coworkers, just please don't invite your dogs (Rover.com guys... I'm looking at you!).

See you all next week!

As was mentioned a couple of times last night, Maker Faire Seattle is this weekend at the Northwest rooms at the Seattle Center from 10-6 on Saturday and Sunday. http://makerfaireseattle.com/
If you order tickets online right now you can five dollars over the cost at the door.
(Kids under the age of 16 get in free.)

I added a few more plugs to http://plugmap.com after I introduced it (turns out the upload issue I was having was just my phone's 3G).

If anybody's interested in setting up an account and adding some plugs to the map, email me at [masked] or message me via Google Hangouts.

I'm trying to limit the user base to people I can contact directly for the moment in case I need to address something I've overlooked (for instance, form validation right now is pretty much on the honor system).

Spent one and half hour for the speaker to turn up. This is too much but cannot be choosy since it is a free event.

Hi Jazzy, the speaker at my event always starts at about 7:30. That's to give people time to talk and meet before hand!

I would not know since it does not display on the event information. There are some of us who need to return to work after the talk and knowing beforehand helps us to prioritize our time better. I shall take note. Thank you for the heads up.

Another great event. #20 was certainly a good one and I'm excited to see what the next 20 bring. Mitch was a fantastic speaker and I really enjoyed listening to what he had to say.

Awesome venue! Hats off to Northeastern for letting us use their wonderful space. Already looking forward to next one.

Mitch Stein's story about overcoming IBM's resistence to innovation captured the essence of a "too big to innovate" corporate culture. His solution of incubating the idea internally and then sharing credit with a smaller, highly respected partner brilliantly sidestepped IBM's ingrained corporate fear of embarrasment.
