Hacker News Seattle Meetup 13 (space mining edition (yeah now you're interested)

It's that time again... time for the 13th Hacker News Seattle Meetup! Come celebrate a "Baker's Dozen" Hacker News events on October 2nd and eat some good food and drink tasty beer. Location is downtown at Perkins Coie, and due to our speaker I'm expecting this to be a bigger than usual event, so I'm increasing the typical RSVP cap from 200 to 250.

Who is our speaker this month? His name is Chris Lewicki, and he's the President and Chief Asteroid Miner of Planetary Resources, a Bellevue-based company who is going to space to mine asteroids.

With the backing of Larry Page, Eric Schmidt, and James Cameron and the skills and experience of former engineers at NASA, JPL, and more.. they out to change the world. Chris will be speaking about being a space entrepreneur, and he'll be talking a bit about how they're applying a lot of the methodologies of the tech startup space... to space.

Thanks to our Premier Sponsor, Outlook.com. Microsoft has just launched their new, free email service and they’re serious about making it the best in the world, and that starts with getting input from users like members of the Hacker News Seattle community. In addition to providing a few other surprises, they're responsible for improving the quality of food at the event!

Big thanks to our venue this month, Perkins Coie! With more than 850 lawyers in 19 offices across the United States and Asia, Perkins Coie represents great companies across a wide range of industries and stages of growth—from start-ups to FORTUNE 50 corporations.

And thanks to the rest of the sponsors for month:

Thanks to Bit Titan, who migrates the world’s mailboxes, from individuals to the largest telecoms, in over 50 countries.

Future Advisor, a local YC company, will also be sponsoring this month's event! They give people data-driven advice to help manage their investments.

See you all on October 2nd!

This was the most interesting HNS meetup yet. Chris Lewicki was a great presenter who clearly presented data that represented a staggering amount of expert-level work amongst him and his peers in his field. Very impressive. The actual presentation deck was engaging, with its data visualizations that effectively reinforced the information that was being presented. In "messy" times like these, hearing about a topic like this and the pragmatic approach that was described is something that gives one hope for the future of humanity, its pioneering spirit, the visionaries amongst us, and the pursuit of things long considered impossible. This is exciting stuff, and I'm glad to have learned more from an expert.

Any time Mr. Lewicki wishes to come back and tell us more about asteroid mining, or shareable information about his previous exploits at NASA and JPL, I'll be there to listen for sure.

I love Potbelly sandwiches and was happily surprised to see that they had catered the event.

Is there an age minimum? I was planning to bring my third-grader as the plus-1 on my RSVP, but I figured I should make sure.
