ike - Building a global tech company from Wellington NZ

  • Oct 31, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • The Biz Dojo

Glenn Milnes is CEO of ike, a Wellington headquartered tech company with big plans. The ike team is fuelled by coffee and driven by a mission to thrill customers with solutions to their biggest (and smallest) measurement and modelling problems.

ike technology is used across industries that need to measure and model their world - utility companies, energy companies, city councils, emergency responders & public safety groups, insurers, builders, architects and a lot of others.

Glenn joined ike having left the dark side of venture capital - where he had executive and board roles for a number of international businesses.

He will touch on some the challenges ike has faced building a global company from Wellington, the temperature for capital-raising in NZ and the US, a view from the trenches of a recent Kickstarter campaign, the ups and downs in the unfashionable business of developing hardware, and why Wellington is a great place to grow a great team.

We'll be holding this meetup at the fabulous BizDojo.

This was my first time at one of these meetups, and it was a great talk by Glenn. I probably can't do a full summary but two points I found interesting were: using a kickstarter campaign, not to raise capital, but to provide exposure of your product to the big players who might not otherwise pay you any attention, and, using a kickstarter campaign to "capture vertical markets," i.e., to identify applications of your product that you will not have thought of.

It would be great if Glenn could make the slides available somehow.

Other things I personally took from it that were good for confirmation were: 1. the value of partnerships to improve your competitive advantage, 2. if one of your key markets is the US, hire a US-based sales/marketing person instead of trying to send a NZer up there.
