I think the point that resonated with me is that out of the four of us speakers we all had slightly different reasons for running distributed teams... I believe these small differences influence a lot - from recruitment to everyday processes. A team distributed primarily because of the lifestyle choices of the members where the member doesn't necessarily have an easy option of working for someone else and the one build of freelancers where this exact choice is the primary drive would have different dynamics. A company that is running a distributed team because of the need for global presence is yet another beast.

It was quite interesting and good to hear stories from guys who are actually working this way. It sounds like working remotely requires some discipline and I'm sure it takes time to make that transition from an office environment. As David mentioned, I'd feel like I'd miss getting together (physically) with people to collaborative solve a problem or develop an idea.

It was interesting. I don't think I would like to be in my cave all day, I would suck at that. I actually, like coming into an office environment and bouncing ideas off colleagues in person..

    February 14, 2014

    • Julie

Yes, the point that you have to chose the right people who are motivated and work well in that environment really came through.

I would seriously ask that these events be moved to a larger venue so that everyone who wants to come can. I believe that these will only continue to get better attended, so please look to using a larger place :) Many thanks!

    • Thong K.

Thanks :) Yes, we started out with the premise that our events will be small to keep the intimate feel. Wellington venues are very hard to come by and it's very hard to beat the Dojo ! Happy to discuss alternatives re: event styles and venues.

Sorry won't be able to make it, hope someone can take my place!

    February 13, 2014

  • Ben

Sorry. I've had to change my plans for the evening.

    February 13, 2014

  • Antonia

I noticed there's 13 people on the waiting list - is there any chance you can record the event for those unable to attend?

    February 13, 2014

  • Thong K.

Wee reminder that the event is for tomorrow ! Please bring along your hardest questions and hard-fought insights too :) This is the first time we are trying this format - it will be interesting to all.

This is becoming an FAQ so for those who haven't been to our meetups before:

5.30pm - food, beverages and networking
6:00pm sharp - we start with round the room intros
    6:10pm - event starts

If you're still looking for presenters I'm happy to talk through some of the processes that have worked for us in some Enspiral teams

    February 7, 2014

    • Ruth M.

Thanks Joshua but I *think* we are ok... will ping the team now just to make sure. Oh, and I guess we should update the event listing, too! We are totally keen on discussion/interaction so if you have stories or tips to share it'd be great to see you there on Thursday!

Would love to present our experience (am a member of 2 different distributed teams) and the tools we use. We are based at BizDojo and (being Atlassian Experts) use products from Atlassian to run our team while the other is run differently by the vendor. Will try to keep product preaching to a minimum and concentrate on problems and solutions if I get a spot :)

Hi folks - we've locked in the evening of 13th of Feb, at the Biz Dojo... will update panellist names & a bit more info closer to the time, but in the meantime, please check your diaries and reconfirm if you're available on the 13th! Hope to see you then/there.

What do you think if we have a panel of a few people with experience in this area with a few minutes each and then Q&A ?

I've been working remotely for a while. Got a few war stories to tell.

    Anyone else happy to share?

Sounds like good suggestion. I spent the past 6 years or so working for a large organization where the team was fragmented across the globe. Some things work some things don't.

Sounds like a great idea - we have a set of tools and processes but would love to learn new ones.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
