Player, don't hate. San Jose is awesome. It's just... misunderstood.
To prove it, we're having a pop-up co-working space powered by NextSpace.
We'll have coffee and coworking in the day time, and retail and beer at night in a long vacant space that we're occupying for 48 hours. AND we're doing it in conjunction with City Hall - who says you gotta fight 'em?
Coworking from 9 - 4 both days powered by NextSpace.
Pop Up retail from 5 - 10 both days powered by San Jose Made
Special What'sNEXT Lunches: Grab your lunch from one of the Moveable Feast Trucks and then come in and check out:
• March 21: Pek Pongpaet : Lessons learned in building the Pinstagram app in two days
• March 22: TaeWoo Kim / Richard Converse / Spencer Yanaga: Marketing TriFecta : Inbound / SEO / PPC
Here's the official deets:
Councilmember Sam Liccardo is hosting Start Up San Jose, a specialty pop up installation. Working with NextSpace and San Jose Made, the vacant space will be programmed for two days with local entrepreneurs. Drop by during the day to co-work, enjoy specialty drinks by Barefoot Coffee or lunch by Moveable Feast. Come again in the evening to shop for locally made crafts by San Jose Made, drinks by San Jose Beer Walks and food by Moveable Feast. Through creative partnerships, Start Up San Jose is creating a model for encouraging innovative start-ups, studios and retailers to start up shop in San Jose
The event was more popular than I anticipated....the next one event gets an industrial strength wireless AP! We are already building an AP on a stick for the next event.

Adding that second AP was a big help for Internet access. Staff and coffee people were great! Gretchen worked hard to make this ad hoc event work. Today, Friday, was much more fun than Thursday. Met interesting coders.
March 22
hey: thanks to all that came out this week! a few internet issues but not bad for our maiden pop up coworking voyage. will let you all know when we do our next events.
March 22
Wowsers...I didn't realize the co-working space was available beyond Thursday. How long will this be available?
March 22
This has potential but the broadband problems have to be worked out. Very good staff, nice location. I still prefer Hacker Dojo or a good coffee shop but not by much.

I'm new to San Jose, looking for co-working space and perhaps someone will be nice to show me around the town.

Report from the workspace:
San Jose IT has upped the bandwidth to 5 mbs down and 2.5 up. That is workable. However, this is just a little beginning. The IT guy explained to me San Jose's downtown fiber Internet potential. Big pipes are coming!
March 21
Report from the workspace:
1) Bandwidth is only 1.4 mbs down and almost no up (.08!!) but the pings are around 5 ms. It took 3 minutes to get my first SpeedTest.net results! Too slow for me. IT guy working on it.
2) Coffee is very good but the brewing process is really slow. One cup at a time.
3) The room is a corner retail space with large windows facing the street and a little plaza. The tables are well used hacker space type folding tables. There are a couple dozen decent office chairs and a couple dozen hard seat straight back cafe chairs. Also two sofas.
4) The main bus stop for downtown and light rail is a block away on Santa Clara St.
5) We make tent cards to identify what we are working on. So far no interaction but maybe after enough coffee :-)
6) Staff is very friendly and trying hard to make this work.
Conclusion:
Ambiance is pretty good, I love the view and street action, and great to have coffee shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. all around.

So we sit there quietly working on our computers like at Hacker Dojo and coffee shops or is there some way to meet people with similar projects and interests?
March 20
Anyone know what the bandwidth situation is there? I can't work in a black hole :-) My wife work a couple of blocks from there.
Downtown San Jose is cool, no not like COLD SF, maybe I should say warm and comfortable all year :-)
I proposed to the redevelopment agency over a decade ago that they let tech entrepreneurs have space free until they dev agency can find paying tenants. No response of course. Look at all the vacant space now to see how effective those people were.

I launched www.simpleous.com earlier this week with 100 plus users now in the system. Being a hacker / ideator building things is what i'm good at. Now i have to focus on marketing / user acquisition. I'm all ears to anyone that can give hood advice on this.
March 21
Hi co-workers. I'm headed down from SF at 10am if anyone wants to ride with me before we sit across from each other all day!
March 21
Whats up everybody. Parking in downtown SJ can be annoying but you can find a spot ahead of time on this map: http://www.parkme.com/map/?lat=...![]()
happy parking!

Couple of questions, this sounds awesome, my "job" is mostly crocheting so is working on a crochet project OK? also There's a meetup in SF Thursday night I don't wanna miss. so I will be there Thursday day and all day Friday. Is this OK? I don't want to take a spot from the more tech focused.
