Azavea is organizing a civic hackathon this weekend to open up PhillyTechWeek: NASA's International Space Apps Challenge. Philadelphia has been chosen as the Global MainStage, meaning luminaries like NASA Deputy CIO Deborah Diaz, Nick Skytland of the Open Innovation team, and renowned astronomer Derrick Pitts of the Franklin Institute will be there. Even former Astronaut Leland Melvin will be joining us on Saturday!

On Friday, April 19th from 6-8pm we have an opening reception at First Round Capital HQ. We'll also have a very limited number of specially designed t-shirts for sale at the door - so get there early! Register here:

The "hackathon" (it's so much more than that! We even have kid friendly challenges!) will be on Saturday and Sunday April 20th and 21st. More details below and registration here:

Presented by NASA and organized in Philadelphia by Azavea, the International Space Apps Challenge is a two-day hackathon where citizens from around the world work together to solve current challenges relevant to both space exploration and social needs. From April 20-21, teams of technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, software developers, and students will compete and collaborate across the world, utilizing publicly available data to design innovative solutions for global challenges in software development, citizen science platforms, sensors and hardware, and data visualization. The 2012 challenge engaged more than 2,000 participants globally who collaborated on over 100 open source solutions to 71 featured challenges.
