Hacks Hackers April Meetup

  • Apr 28, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

***TUBE STRIKE***There is a tube strike starting tonight at about 9.30pm. We are still going ahead! We'll make sure the meet-up doesn't run over time -- it tends to end before 9pm anyway.***

April's meetup will again be at the welcoming start-up hub that is Wayra. Thanks @WayraUK!

As ever, we're going to have some great speakers.

Remember, lots of people want to come to these, so please only sign up if you can come!!

Speakers

1) Will Moy, @puzzlesthewill, Full Fact

Full Fact, the independent fact-checking organisation, has recently worked with LBC, the Independent and Buzzfeed to live factcheck the leaders' debates on the EU.

We'll be talking about real time fact-checking; statistics as open data; the tools Full Fact offers journalists; and the possibilities for automated fact-checking.

Will Moy will also be talking about how we can pick up where Democracy Club left off at the last election.

2) Lewis Whyld, @LewisWhyld, the Telegraph

As a Telegraph journalist and visual innovations specialist, Lewis documents major issues and news stories using cutting-edge technology to better understand the story and to create engaging journalism for the viewer.

This includes the use of drones, virtual reality cameras and other devices in places such as the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Lightning pitches - 3 minutes of electrifying insight...

-- Tom Foster, Silicon Milkroundabout

-- Neila Romdane, MediaLab Preston

-- Pat Long, The Times

--Fernando Ripolles, Hiyalife

DRINKS will be a bit limited this month, and we might ask for a voluntary contribution. Often we have generous sponsors. This month, sadly not. If you're interested in sponsoring one of our events get in touch by emailing [masked].

I love the hacks and would support the group.
I would offer space and free barbeque for a 100, but unfortunately I live in Guildford.
I like to promote my concept of the Eco system. Please read CH2 http://myecocity.co.uk

Hi everyone and the team, Thanks for allowing me to discuss The Digital Accelerator Programme the other night. The programme is an ERDF/Mayor of London funded initiative which will run between now and June 2015. We are hoping to deliver 12 hours of fully funded business support services, diagnostics and growth plans to 300 companies from across London from the digital technology and high growth media sectors.

Our next event is a hackathon on 19th and 20th May with SIGFOX whose technology will quite revolutionise the way we engage with everyday objects and its applications are limitless. Developers who wish to receive more information about the event please feel free to contact me on [masked] If anyone is interested in hearing more about The Digital Accelerator Programme, how it can benefit your company and what we hope to deliver over the next 15 months please get in touch too ! Thanks again, great night and great company !

    Best

My first HH Meetup and I really enjoyed it. Learnt alot from both speakers and other guests were really friendly. Would be good to see a drinks option for people who don't drink alcohol. But, otherwise a great night.

Thanks. Cassie, Thanks Sarah, that was a seriously awesome event tonight. Both key presentations were great and real eye-openers. Loved both Will Moy's @FullFact and Lewis Whyld's very visually engaging drone stories... I hope everyone pitched in for the beers....

  • Dave N.

Hi ladies - it would be useful to have on the description of each of your (excellent) events, the approximate start/end times of each talk/section, and when the breaks are.

This would be especially handy for tomorrow, with an impending tube strike (starting from 9pm) which will affect people's travel times.

    1 · April 27, 2014

    • Cassie W.

Hi Dave. While HH appears to be an event of military precision, it's normally quite fluid...!

      April 28, 2014

    • Cassie W.

But rough timing: First speaker at 7, first break around 7.45, second speaker at 8.10, end around 8.40.

It's looking unlikely that I'll be able to make it tomorrow (I was hoping I'd be feeling much better by now, but I'm still running a fever), so I've just released my spot.

    April 27, 2014

  • Jovan S.

I've realised it's taken me to a waiting list. Are all the places gone?

    April 25, 2014

    • Cassie W.

HI Jovan, yes I'm afraid so! Keep an eye out, as people do remove themselves and you may get moved up onto the list.

      April 25, 2014

    • Stefano G.

Unfortunately I can't make it, I'm freeing a +1 for the next in the waiting list
