Fail- Proofing Hadoop Clusters with Automatic Service Failover

With the increase use of Hadoop comes an increase in the need for critical safeguards, especially in the financial industry where any data loss could mean millions in penalties. What happens when parts of an Hadoop cluster goes down? How do Hadoop based solutions for the financial industry cope with NameNode failures? We will share the failover issues we've encountered and best practices for performing continuous health monitoring, best suited for the financial industry. In addition, we will cover ZooKeeper-based failover for NameNode and other related SPOF services (e.g., JobTracker, Oozie, Kerberos).

Jeffery Krone, VP of R&D, Co-founder, Zettaset Inc.

== UPDATE ==

I am sorry to announce that we've had some last minute changes and you will need to re-register for tonight's meetup, "Fail- Proofing Hadoop Clusters with Automatic Service Failover," at 345 Hudson St, 5th Floor, PulsePoint.

Our building recently changed its policy on event / guest registration and a last minute attempt to secure a new venue hasn't worked out. We've reset all RSVPs and opened registration with a new 70-person maximum and a cutoff of 3pm. If you would to attend tonight's meetup, you *must* change your RSVP to attending before 3pm. Check-in will also be strict, so no guests, and if your meetup name does not contain your full name or otherwise doesn't match what's printed on the identification you'll be showing, please let me know. Anyone whose name is not on the registration will not be permitted entrance.

We're very sorry and we'll be looking for alternative venues in the future. Especially given these circumstances, we are going to try to record the meetup if possible and will share it.

    @Andrew - excellent, thanks! Keep in mind free Vimeo accounts have a 500 MB limits (or at least they used to).

    We do have a recording. I should be able to post it tonight. Sorry for the delay, but I haven't found time to convert it from GoToMeeting format to something I can put on vimeo.

    Good information on zettaset. Hopefully not all meetups will be sales presentations, and some can be just tech sharing sessions.

    It was okay. Sounded more like a sales pitch for the most part and not a tech talk. Still got a couple of pointers from the presentation.

    Please at least get a video. It was not pleasant to unRSVP people without notice.

    Next time we shouldn't have this problem! Registration wasn't full at 3pm so I randomly added people from the not-attending list in lottery fashion. At this point the registration list is closed. Sorry! Building security will not permit you entrance if you are not among the currently registered attendees, for whom they will have printed passes available.

    Sorry, I sent out a note to the email list but apparently that's not gone through.

    Can I ask why eveyone was pretty much un-rvsp'd to the meetup? Is this not happening?

    Will see if we can manage video, but despite interest have not yet managed to line up the pieces to do so

    @Jason, any chance of video?

    May 29, 2012

  • Otis G.

    Ah, I'd so love to attend this!
    But we'll be in Berlin at Buzzwords.
    Any chance you can record this talk?
