West Rock Ridge State Park, Hamden- Red Trail, Mountain Road entry point

This is the first time for this group to walk this trail. The trail is a beginner- to moderate-level hike through the woods. We'll be picking up the red trail in the northern third of the park. There's off road parking here- no parking lot. Perhaps there's room for a half dozen vehicles.

This location is not that hard to find. From Dixwell Avenue (Rt. 10) in Hamden, turn onto Benham Street. Follow Benham all the way until it ends when it intersects with Main Street. Turn right on Main Street then take first left onto Mountain Road. There will be a place to park on the side of the road about 500 yards from where you turned onto Mountain from Main. If you see greenhouses on the right you've gone too far.

There really is nothing nearby to provide a specific address. Here are a couple of links that show the area: https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&channel=np&q=map+of+hamden+ct&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89e7db7319867789:0x71dd638dcd38e4f1,Hamden,+CT&gl=us&ei=t5JLUv20GcfqqAGchoDwBA&ved=0CCsQ8gEwAA and http://www.ct.gov/deep/lib/deep/stateparks/maps/westrock.pdf.

Hope to see you there!!

Not too much area for parking, but the trail is wide and flat and not at all difficult. The trail connects to Lake Wintergreen, where there is a larger parking lot. We opted for a loop around the White, connecting to the Violet back to the Red. Thank you for this suggestion, Linda! We missed your company!

Hurray... we had no no-shows event! And what a day for hiking we had. I just love exploring this park... looking forward to more hikes amongst its many trails. Many thanks, everyone, for coming on this hike.

I just checked the link I put in from google maps. It did not retain the correct zoom level I wanted. You may have to zoom yourself once you open the link. However, the link to the CT DEEP map of the park works. It's a trail map for the park, but it also has the roads around the park labeled.
