E18 - Beginner Hill Climbing 101

Ride Summary:

Terrain: Mild hills at 5% grade with a few short sections of 7%
Distance: approx 18 Miles

Pace: 13-14mph on the flat, whatever it takes to get up the hill.

Rider Level: Beginner hill climbers and up.
Sweep: Yes

Meet 12pm - leave 12:15!

Welcome to Beginner Hill Climbing 101!

This is a ride for all the "Tweeners" who are ready for something with a little more bite but are not quite ready some of the harder/faster rides.  At the same time, this ride is all about camaraderie and being social.  If you are looking for a fast ride, this is not it.

So what can you expect?  The route is entirely on the bike trail, no road crossings of any kind.  We will start at the Fish Hatchery and head up to Beals Point via the trail on the north side of Lake Natoma.  The ride is 18 miles in length and includes some hills on the back end.  These hills are mild but present enough of a challenge to help build technique and confidence for the longer more difficult rides, if that is your goal.  We'll take one brief stop on the way to gather up the group, then begin our climb.  Once we arrive at Beals Point/Folsom Lake we'll take a nice break and everyone can compare war stories.  There are bathrooms and water on site.

While this is a beginning hill ride it is not meant for beginners.  You should be comfortable riding for more than 30 minutes without stopping.  I will sweep (bring up the rear of all riders) as long as you are meeting the 13-14mph minimum speed on the flat.  If you discover you have bitten off more than you wanted you are free to turn around at any time, we take the same route in both directions.

Rain will cancel.

Jeff provided helpful tips and excellent support for all levels. Various levels of skill and fitness so there was a place for everyone. Thanks, Jeff, for hosting this ride.

This ride sounds just perfect for me. I am returning to biking after rehab from several limiting "Orthopedic Issues".

Hopefully a non-issue but the AR50 (American River 50 mile) race is happening on Saturday also and their course intersects this ride. They are starting at 6am so might be through this area before the 10am start (approx 20 miles from their start so they'd have to be running pretty slow to not have already passed). Just a heads-up

    Hi, Jeff.
I hope you are able to schedule another one of these beginner hill climbing rides. I've committed to another ride on April 6 and already paid fees for it, otherwise I'd love to get any tips and hints to get better at climbing.
