BRIGHTON ROCK............s! - A Day at the Seaside.

NB The date for this has changed - please check your diary.

Pack your bucket and spade, your skimpies and mankinis for a Day at the Seaside.

We're going to Brighton - the jewel in the crown of Sussex - let's catch up with Fred Hale, Pinkie and Ida as we search out Brighton Rock and everything else that Brighton has to offer - well from a photographic rather than a gangster viewpoint.   From the superb beach and Palace Pier to the market area of North Laine, its graffiti and shops, to the quaint alleyways and shops in the Lanes, Brighton has everything going for it.  The photography includes:  people galore,  from 'kiss me quick day trippers' to the local chic and camp elegance, beachlife - again people, the amazing pier, and the beautiful regency architecture.

We'll start the Meetup at 11.30am outside Brighton Railway Station to meet those coming on the train (for those driving there is parking nearby) and then we'll explore the bohemian North Laine area with its market and then walk around the outside of the Royal Pavilion and Dome - built as a holiday residence for the then Prince Regent - George IV.  Then we'll enter the Lanes - the famous narrow streets, full of small shops - actually this used to be the original fishing village of Brighthelmstone.

After this it'll be time for lunch and we have a choice - one of the excellent pubs or cafes, or go down to the pier and have fish and chips.

After lunch I would suggest a walk along the pier and take in the air - there is a funfair for anyone who fancies a go on the Helter Skelter or Ghost Train.  Lots of photo ops of and on the pier, people and the sea. Then we can wander down on the beach and capture more people or a different angle of the seaside view.

A walk along the seafront east towards Kemptown will lead us past Volk's minature railway,  Madeira Drive towards the naturist beach - no photos please..........but if you fancy a dip then leave your speedos in your bag and the rest of us will turn the other way!!  We could walk up the steps to Marine Parade with a view down on the seafront.

We'll finish when we get tired - I suspect about 4 ish and then maybe a cuppa somewhere and then home.

CHALLENGES:

  1. BRIGHTON - any picture including the word Brighton - use your imagination and keep your eyes peeled.
  2. Brighton Life - could be a street scene, could be a shop or market shot, a tourist with ice cream or ketchup on their face! - anything to show what goes on in Brighton - ANYTHING!!!!!
  3. Lastly a picture of the seafront - the pier the esplanade, the elegant buildings.....
  4. Really Lastly - anything else but have a go at the three above.

GETTING THERE:

I will be driving from Farnham/Guildford and can take 3 - AA routeplanner say 1hr 30 mins.   Others who will be driving please offer lifts to others and those who want lifts please make it known so you can communicate with those offering......   Good train service from  London and also Portsmouth and Southampton - direct trains.

EQUIPMENT:

Swimming cosies and speedos (no I'm joking).

If any sun high factor sun screen (factor 50), hat and water.

Camera - lenses - bring what you have as loads of different shots up for the grabbing. - no tripod needed unless you have something special in mind and have a strong back.

TIPS:

For the shots my advice is as before - keep looking around you for that special shot - be prepared to walk to get a better view and think about view points - crouch or high up (you can do this from Marine Parade for instance). For people shots - be quick - that shot will only be available for 1-2 seconds. But once again remember it is you that takes a good photo and not your equipment - you can get a good imaginative shot from the most basic camera so come along.

COST:

£1 Meetup fee plus getting there.

All in all it should be a brill day - even if not sunny.    Look out for emails and updates as this meetup is a way off and I will look up parking places etc.

OK Here is the google map link for the proposed route:

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=205479868673441719319.0004ddaf422937fc8659e&msa=0

Please read it, print it and bring it with you.

Parking I suggest Trafalgar St Car park - near the station (the station because we can meet anybody coming by train).   Lifts -  please if anyone needs a lift ask and if others can give a lift please offer.

I'm away on hol till 12 June so can't reply to anyone before then - however that leaves loads of time to buy bucket and spade and top up that all over spray on tan before hitting the Cliff Bathing Beach (look it up on google!)!!

Hi all - just back from my hols and thanks to Antonia for pointing out it's the London to Brighton on that day. (the previous date was the nude cycle ride! - so perhaps lycra is better....). The cycle route takes them east of where we will be but I'm sure there will be loads of people and traffic. With this in mind I plan to leave early 8-8.30. I have found a park and ride site - http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/parking-and-travel/travel-transport-and-road-safety/park-ride-1 BN1 5JD with a bus to the station every 30 mins, 11 and 41 mins past the hour (£4.60) which I might use if traffic looks heavy - otherwise as planned. I'll email my mobile number to members before the day.

I can offer a lift from Farnham/Guildford area.

Please RSVP 'No' if you are not coming or text me on the day.

Many apologies everyone - I will probably need to change the date for this - a holiday I have booked on has been cancelled and the only other date includes this day - please watch out for messages and apologies again.

Depends on the weather. A couple of years ago (sunny) about[masked] cyclists, with most ending up at the naturist beach at the end (5 pm? - can't remember). The parking pressure is not an issue as most riders will try and find non-car methods of getting there, one of the aims of the ride being to protest against oil dependence and unsustainable transport. It will make for some unique photo ops; if I see a clump of Hampshire-looking photographers as I go past I'll give you a special wave.

Thanks Matt - we'll keep the date then - hope to see you cycle past!

Peter - Please can I car share with you as I can easily park near you en route?
