The Hartley Wintney Wassail!

Do something really quite different and join us for this wassailing or should I say "apple howling". This event, held near to twelfth night, celebrates both the passing of Christmas and the future good health of fruit trees.  It all starts outside the Waggon and Horses Pub with the Hook Eagle Morris Men dancing and of course you can dance with them too if you want! Then we will take part in the torch procession which makes its way to the Community Orchard at Hunts Common. Once at the orchard there will be singing and dancing and a wonderful firework display. Complementary cups of cider or apple juice will also be available. A tree will be blessed then the procession will head back to the pub to carry on celebrating.

Traditionally the custom  of wassailing ('Wassail' is from the Anglo-Saxon 'waes hael' meaning "be in good health") involved the local farm workers visiting the orchard after dark with shotguns, horns, food and a large pail of cider. They would make a loud noise to raise the Sleeping Tree Spirit and to scare off demons. Cider would be poured over the roots and pieces of toast placed in the branches as a gift to the spirit of the tree. The wassail song is sung as a blessing or charm to bring fruitfulness or even in admonishment not to fail in the upcoming year.

PLEASE BRING A LANTERN AND TORCH WITH YOU!

Parking - Public car park with 132 spaces at Monachus Lane - charges of 70p per hour up until 7pm. It is a short walk from the car park to the Waggon and Horses.
