Welcome to the Hampton Roads Pagan Meetup Group. As Pagans, we are a very open minded set of people who welcome and encourage all forms of spiritual thought and love to share and explore them together. As a resident of the Hampton Roads area for over 20 years, I have found pockets of the Pagan community scattered throughout the area, in different social circles, from different communities, different ethnicities, genders, etc., all of which seemed to be disconnected from one another, and lack a cohesive thread. As such, we are unable to come together as a people and to develop a supportive community for one another. One of the purposes of this group is to bring like-minded people together, to share experiences, to learn from one another, and to celebrate our individual uniqueness and rich diversity, as well as the commonalities which bind us together as a culture. Ideally, this group will serve as a safe haven for all seekers of knowledge and current practitioners, as a web to collect and connect us, to help each other grow, to assist some of us to find our true paths and to ultimately make us stronger as a community; the ultimate goal being to help us to celebrate the wondrous diversity of our local community. What this group is NOT about: This group is not about starting a coven or a practicing circle. The idea behind this group is fellowship, community and personal / spiritual growth. We don't "preach" to others and don't appreciate being "preached to," I believe we have all had enough of that. Throughout history, we Pagans have experienced enough ridicule, prejudice and discrimination for our spiritual practices, and this group will have a ZERO tolerance for such behavior of any kind. Meetup group meetings should be free from persecution, and people from all walks of life and practice will be encouraged to attend. Any and all forms of discrimination, or denigration based on a member’s race, ethnicity, physical abilities, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender, age, country of origin, primary language spoken, spiritual practice, etc. will not be tolerated, and group members exhibiting such hate filled behavior will be asked to leave the group, and will not be allowed to return. Respect, tolerance and celebration of our wonderful diversity is encouraged. Some people prefer to be in the “broom closet” for personal or professional reasons, and group members are strongly encouraged to respect the rights of others to advertise their Pagan practice as THEY see fit. This is supposed to be a safe place and a sacred space, folks, help me keep it this way! What this group IS about: This group is about coming together as a diverse group of people and finding common ground and connection, through education, sharing life experiences, food and libation, and friendship. This should be a place to leave the drama of the world behind, relax and kick back at our meetups without having to worry about being 'right' or 'wrong' with your beliefs. Occasionally, members will talk about a variety of topics, including upcoming events of interest to those in the Pagan community. You are absolutely encouraged to attend and bring your ideas and input and positive energy. During the year it is hoped that members will volunteer to lead workshops from experts on subjects from basic rituals and paths to study classes in tarot, astrology, and knowledge on various paths, all held by members in the community at either local Pagan shops or other preplanned venues. Monthly social meetings will be planned for coffee shops (Pagan Coffee Night), local restaurants (Pagan Pub Night), and even a Kitchen Witch Meetup, to share food, fun and fellowship. Although we do not plan to hold any public rituals as a meetup group, we do try to keep you informed on any that are held in our community so you are able to attend. Most of our meetups are free, but in the future we may charge those wishing to sign up to a workshop we host to cover for use of a workshop facility. However, it is not unusual for members to contribute a donation (love offering) to help defray the costs of running this site. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted at Meetup events, (except for Meetups involving restaurants or potluck dinners where alcohol use – NOT ABUSE - is permitted). For now, this is a group for adults, as legal complications related to parental consent etc. can be extremely difficult when organizing events for our community (some parents hear the word “Pagan” and start lighting torches and grabbing pitchforks). Also, carpooling and ride sharing are encouraged, but for the safety and respect of group members, if you do not have a ride to AND from the Meetup location, please do not come expecting that someone will drive you home. We look forward to meeting you at our next gathering. Bright Blessings, Hampton Roads Pagan Meetup Organizers
