The South Pasadena Community Chorus and Calvary Chancel Choir will hold its second event
this spring on Sunday, May 19th at 4pm. Rehearsals are on Saturday mornings from 9-11 at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 1050 Fremont, South Pasadena. The first rehearsal is Saturday, April 6th. Child care can be provided free of charge with prior arrangement.
In his reach ever-forward, Johannes Brahms passes by the form and substance of the traditional mass for the dead, the Requiem, and writes in a way that expresses some of the most poignant and heart-felt thoughts any member of the human race can own.
No Kyrie, Gloria, and Sanctus here. Not the usual texts from Scripture either. Instead, the giant, Brahms, seeks his own quotations from the B – quotations that comment on the shared grief of those mourn, those who seek comfort. Brahms shapes an effective and beautiful melody to depict the text “Behold, all flesh is as the grass that withereth and the flowers that fadeth” – it’s a melody that rises briefly and then returns to the point of origin, just as the grass rises from the ground only to collapse and die back to the earth.
And so it goes, the original six movements plus the one he added after the work’s “completion.” Defiant and strong in the face of death, in other movements: sensitive, gentle, and caring. Reflective and comforting in places, questioning and paralyzed with grief in others. The breadth of his emotions spans the broadest emotional field one can imagine. And it’s all perfectly matched by the range of his compositional creativity and skill.
If you sang this work with us in 2011, or if you have sung it elsewhere, you’ll jump at the chance to have the experience again. If you’ve never sung this piece, you have a marvelous opportunity waiting you. Come and add your voice and your energy to the other sonorities in the chorus and in the orchestra. Come and own your share of this world masterpiece. You will be touched, and touched deeply. That’s a promise!
