Memorial Weekend BBQ Olympics

Let's get the teams back together for a BBQ and the 2nd competition in the BBQ Olympic games!

Come out to Kensington Park and meetup at Bay Woods Picnic Area which is just west of the Boat Rental location (http://www.metroparks.com/Kensington-Metropark-Maps) for another round of meetup group vs meetup group. We will be challenging each other to the BBQ Olympics - practice your ladder golf, cornhole, lawn darts, etc. as we will have team competitions to see who will take home the trophy this time.

We will need games brought so if you have one of the games or something else you think would be fun - post a comment and we will include it in our event.  If you can help coordinate the games, please contact me.

This will be a family / kid friendly event - bring them out for a fun day at the park.  If someone wants to coordinate games / activities for the kids, please contact me.  We will also be near the water near the boat launch, swimming area and fishing areas.

We have changed the food arrangements and we are not renting a pavilion so the event will be FREE. Be sure to bring your own chair(s) or come early to help us pull together a few picnic tables.

Please bring a dish to pass along with whatever you would like to cook on the grill and the beverage of your choice.  The dish to pass could be side dishes, condiments (ketchup, mustard, cheese, etc.), chips, desserts, charcoal/grill, ice, beverages, plates, cups, utensils, etc.  Please RSVP and comment on what you are bringing so we all don't bring the same thing!

Note that there is a fee to enter Kensington Park.  You may want to find people to car pool with or plan to also pay the park entrance fee ($7 per car).

This will be posted on the Brightoneers, Ann Arbor Entertainment as well as Michigan Singles and Beyond.  We are also inviting the Lakes Area Ladies to join us.  Please RSVP on only one of the groups. Thanks!

Things are coming together nicely. We still need a good charcoal grill. Anyone have one? I would hate to get there only to find a substandard park grill.

I also checked the seven day weather forecast and it looks good for Saturday..........sunny and 72 degrees. Bring the Coppertone! :-)

Anyone got a radio or MP3 player so we have some music?

Hi everyone - note that the location in the park has changed. We will be close to the water so anyone interested in fishing, bring your gear and license. We are also within walking distance of the boat rental facility which offers paddle boats, kayaks, fishing boats as well as an excursion boat to take a tour of the lake as a group. See you all soon

    May 22, 2014

  • Will H.

The weather forecast for Saturday is looking good. They are saying "Sunny and 74 Degrees". Perfect weather for a BBQ!

    2 · May 21, 2014

  • Adam P.

As i mentioned before, i will be bringing ladderball, frisbees, baseball gloves, my balls, and a bat in case Sandy can't keep her hands off me again.

I will also bring several packages of fancypants brats and my buns. And i will bring something spicy hot and saucy besides myself.

I am also bringing jello shots but of course i would never do that since it is against park rules.

I may have my handsome young ward with me so all the ladies need to be prepared to swoon, and not over me this time.

Finally, i will teach only the cool people a drinking game to share at home or school or work or church.

I just had a party at my house yesterday. So I still have some beverages but haven't been opened as well as paper plates and extras to bring. I also like to bring some baked beans. I think they go well at the picnic. So the five dollars this no problem either. Please include my baked beans and the beverages in your list if you'd like. This is sounds like it's going to be a great fun time!!

This is shaping up to be a wonderful fun filled event! In addition to the "Diet Beer" I will bring Chinese Chicken wings (w/ginger & garlic), shortbread's for dessert, and $5. PS I am planning on bringing a lawn chair and recommend others consider doing the same.

It would be nice to see what everyone is bringing between all of the groups so we know what is still needed. Does anyone have a list? Are we just bringing food for our group?

    1 · May 18, 2014

    • Lisa S

I am building a list and posting on each of the groups to coordinate everyone and ask for donations

      May 18, 2014

  • peggy

I believe I said I would bring some paper plates is someone wants to grab silverware and cups napkins

    1 · May 18, 2014

    • Lisa S

I will take care of silverware and napkins and have an extra set of cooking utensils as well

      May 18, 2014

  • Will H.

Okay........I ordered 50 1/4 lbs. hamburger patties from the meat counter at Meijer's. Worked out a deal and it will be a dollar a burger. I'll pick the burgers up on Saturday morning.

I also bought hot dogs, hamburger buns, hot dog buns, charcoal, and lighter fluid. So I have $43.83 for those items. Add the cost of the burgers and I've kept the cost below $100 dollars.

That leaves $25 dollars........I'll grab a big container of mustard and ketchup.

    Will H.

I hope you all have fun next weekend!!! Thanks to all of you for chipping in and getting this going! Too much food, or lack of food, it won't matter!! You will all have a great time! (just watch out for Marjie and her mad corn hole tosses!) :)

    2 · May 18, 2014

  • Bob

    Hi Everyone,
I'll bring a few 2 liters of pop and ice and cups
I have a badminton set also and maybe 6 raquets.
I agree with the $5 donation also.

    1 · May 18, 2014

  • Sandy

Much of what Lisa described in her comment for the event we still need like paper plates, napkins, cups, forks, knives, etc, which I can pick up from Costco, including anything else you may want like chips, ketchup, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, maybe BBQ Sauce? I am willing to get the stuff at a good price and bring it if others can pitch in to help cover some of the cost. I am thinking about making a dessert, however it will just depend on how the work week goes.

Will - Sounds good, I don't have a problem bringing $5 for the below mentioned items/cost.

    1 · May 18, 2014

    • Adam P.

Sandy my dear, if you'll do the work i'll kick in $20 because i'm lazy

      2 · May 18, 2014

  • Marjie

I have a set of cornhole boards to bring

    1 · May 18, 2014

    • Melissa

Of course Marjie has cornhole boards!! No wonder she kicked everyone's butt at On The Dunes!!!

      3 · May 18, 2014

    • Adam P.

I'll bring ladderball, frisbies, baseball mitts and my balls ;)

      2 · May 18, 2014

  • Will H.

Not sure who's doing what.......but it looks like we are going to need some stuff to make this BBQ happen.

I think that the hot dogs, burgers, buns, charcoal, and charcoal lighter fluid should be covered by a $5 dollar donation from each participant. That would give a budget of $125 dollars. I'm thinking 50 hot dogs and 50 burgers. Do does everyone think?

    2 · May 17, 2014

  • Bobbie Jo D.

I am good with a $5 donation. I also have a corn hole game I can bring.

    1 · May 17, 2014

  • Will H.

I have no problem picking up the items below if everyone plans on chipping in.

Next, we need a grill. Does the park have grills or do we need to bring one? Does anyone have a big charcoal grill they could bring? Might be better than what the park offers (if they even have anything).

We will need grilling utensils. I have those and will bring them.

As for alcohol, everyone is on their own. Not sure what the rules are in the park, but if we keep it "low key", we should be okay. Tough to tell a rum and coke from a regular coke. Beer out of the bottle or can might be obvious.......again in a cup, it's hard to tell what you're drinking.

Let me know what everyone thinks and we'll go from there.

    Will H.
