Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion National Parks (2 weeks)

  • June 7, 2014 · 10:00 AM

We have a 2 week itinerary planned for Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion National Parks. However, nothing can be confirmed until we obtain back country permits. It will likely be 3-4 weeks until we know our permit situation. We will be requesting permits for 5-6 people. This is the maximum small group size for the park.

Plan:
Fly to Las Vegas or Phoenix; June 6th(evening) or 7th(morning); rent car(s)
Drive to Grand Canyon
Backpack South to North Rim (3 days; 21 miles)
Drive to Bryce
Basecamp 2-3 nights
Day hike Fairyland Loop
Day hike Peekaboo Canyon
Day hike Staircase Escalante
Drive to Zion
Backpack Lava Point to Emerald Pools (2 days; 14 miles)
Drive back to Vegas/Phoenix June 19th.

Flight location depends largely on cost. We'd like to fly into Vegas but right now Phoenix airfare is ~$200 cheaper. We will reevaluate after permits are obtained. Needless to say itinerary is subject to change...lol

Weather:
In the Grand Canyon expect hi temps around 100 and low temps around 70. Hot days. We will hike early to avoid hiking during the hottest parts of the day.

Who:
Experienced backpackers who are not afraid of heights and can carry 4+L of water in hot conditions.

BILLY, LOVE, LOVE THE PHOTOS!!! There are many more great ones you have taken - are you going to download it somewhere? Can I have the link please? Would love to see them all especially the scenery ones without peeps in it. Btw, where is the one you took me jumping off the cliff on the first day in GC? Thinking of it as one of my profile pixs ; p

Just posted a backpacking trip for this weekend in harriman. Join us if you are able. Our canyon trip is less than 2 months out now and this will be a good warmup. If you haven't been backpacking recently make a point to backpack a couple weekends before we hit the Grand Canyon. The better in shape you are the more you will enjoy the experience out west. I also found some great canyon options to replace the Subway. The canyons look really awesome!

Hey Billy, I had already signed up for Smokey Mountain Traverse this weekend. Have fun! Hopefully we will be able to do a smaller backpacking trip before the BIG one!

No worries; I know it's last minute. This may be the only one I am able to post before our trip. Between family plans and 3 other trips I am on including Pemi backpacking and Presi day hike my cup is pretty full :) Great you are out there too! Enjoy!!!

Zion back country reservation confirmed! It's an online reservation system that went up 20 mins ago for the month of June and already 1/2 the month is booked. We are one of the lucky ones here! Yeehaa. We have our West Rim Campsite :) We did not win the lottery for the Subway Canyoneering. There are other ways to get a permit closer to our dates but feel free to search out what you would like to do on that day; it's currently free on the calendar. We'll do the same! Cheers.

Working hard to finalize enough details today to buy flights. We plan to buy flights over the next few days. We were able to fit Havasu and the Subway into our itinerary. Havasu we have reservations for....barely, luckily. The Subway we won't find out until 4/5/2014. We will be driving Sat June 7th into the Grand Canyon and start our backpacking Sun June 8th. So flights down will be friday 6th pm or sat 7th am(7am). You can choose. We will finish the trip Friday June 20th after our final day of hiking and work our way back to our flight city Saturday June 21st. Of course anyone is welcome to stay longer. Just wanted to give you this update. Let you know I haven't forgotten about you :). I'll send out the itinerary and more specific flight information shortly.

I've been there 3 times last was before the big flood 08 or 09. They have no way to get trash out except by helicopter . I did see a horse break his leg they shot him and drug him off trail then burnt him . I assume do he wouldn't smell. It is not the best living conditions down in this canyon but you will not see a skinny Indian . If you go make sure to go below mooney falls and follow the river down stream toward the Colorado for a few miles and see the beauty
