SF Hardware Startup Meetup @ IDEO SF

Happy belated New Year SF Hardwarians!

It's that time again for another Hardware Startup Meetup, and this time we're in for a treat: world-renowned design firm IDEO is going to be hosting us in their SF Embarcadero location!

We'll be doing our regular program with hardware demos starting at 6:15pm SHARP, and then general networking until 8pm. Also, there's not a ton of parking around there, so public transit is advised.

DEMOS: If you want to do a demo, fill-out your company / project info on this spreadsheet under the "Feb 7, 2013" tab: SFHardwareMeetupSheet.

Shout-Outs:

Some interesting news from some of our members:

  • Renee DiResta has taken The Maker Map to a functional v1.0 that we can use. If you remember, a while back we had a special Hardware Hackathon to make a map of local resources: suppliers, service providers, etc. Shortly after, Google changed a bunch of stuff, and it needed an overall. I'm happy to report that it is now up-and-running! Thanks Renee!!! Look out soon for news of another hackathon to make it even better.

If you're a front-end web developer, you can be INVALUABLE to this project - let us know if you'd like to build a simple nav interface for the map. Also, if you want to submit a resource: go here (be sure to see if we already have it).

Check out her write-up for more info: The Maker Map MVP Goes Live
  • David Lang also had a successful Kickstarter for his "Zero to Maker" book that is a guide for people just getting into making - still going if you want to get a copy.

As always guys, thanks again for your support of this movement, and let me know if there's anything you want to help with (I could totally use help with this group).

See you at the Meetup!

    Hello Nick, et al,

I am interested in starting a chapter in the south bay - SF is a bit of a haul for me. There must be many members from the peninsula and points further south...

They locked out a bunch of people, even those of us who were confirmed

    2 · February 7, 2013

    • Kate R.

Have a hardcore time you *have* to be there if you RSVPd within the # of spots, then at that time open it up to people in line that were on the waiting list.

      1 · February 8, 2013

    • Kate R.

And 3 other meetups I'm part of had the exact problem and have gone to a $5 pay, and it made all the difference. Lots of people still, but more % of rsvps show up. It worked.

  • Steve R.

Enjoyed the presentations and the setting. Thanks to Nick for all his efforts and his good natured way of handling unknown unknowns.

  • David S.

Saw some interesting ideas and got to chat with a couple of the creators. Always enjoy the insightful behind the scenes war stories of bringing ideas to fruition. Good to see such a huge turnout and interest too! Proof that hardware is alive and thriving in SF! :)

I made other plans too, since I was on the waitlist until a couple of hours ago. Looking forward to making it for the next IDEO event.

I made other plans since I had been on the waitlist until just recently. I'll let someone have my place. Have fun!

Your wish is my command! Wait list added!

    1 · January 28, 2013

    • Tapan P.

Nick, can you link us to a waitlist with number next to name? I'm trying to see if I made it in the 200 person cut.

      February 7, 2013

    • Nick P.

You should see the number now.

      February 7, 2013

  • Nick P.

Okay - I just changed the attendance list to 200, but everyone after that won't be able to get in. I did just so you'd know what order you're in. Sorry for the confusion guys - the amount of response was crazy! These are good problems to have though!

    February 7, 2013

    • Nick P.

Hey William, the list should update dynamically, but it's probably safe to say that you won't be able to make it in.

Sorry to say I will be unable to join as well. Next time!

    February 7, 2013

  • Andrew B.

Really sad I can't make it, but you all don't want my flu. Have an awesome time. Someone take my slot --- quick! :-)

    February 7, 2013

  • James B.

How does the wait list work?

    February 6, 2013

    • Nick P.

Yea, I just learned about this today (they were concerned we'd get mobbed b/c of the huge response - haha), so as far as I can tell it'd have to be by this PDF that has the order people signed up in: https://docs.google.co...

      February 6, 2013

    • Nick P.

@John, we just learned today and meetup doesn't allow this fine grain of control, hence the doc I posted. Just Ctrl+F your name, I'm guessing that 200 probably won't even be hit, but you never know.

@Bryan - Love it! Lead the way! I'll try to head over after.
