Flowing water and ice

Due to the cold weather and the snow - for safety and health reasons, the meet-up has been postponed one week to Saturday Feb 1, starting at 1:00pm and lasting until 3:30pm. That will get us on the road home while it is light.

Photograph Kilgore Falls - arrival time at the Kilgore Falls parking lot (see map). Steve Sattler and I will be available to help anyone who has questions, needs a hint, or wants someone around for whatever reason. The two of us will remain there until meet-up ending time.

The water will be flowing - ice depends on Mother Nature!

I've been up there quite a few times over the past year. I'm actually working on a four part series, doing the same shot but in each of the four seasons.

Just an FYI, for those of you interested in shooting a long exposure, make sure you bring a few very dark ND filters. I've even stacked a 2 and 4 on top of a polarizer to do a nice 20 sec exposure. But this could be crucial if there's a lot of snow (i.e. a lot of white) as it will blow out the image during a long exposure, so the darker you can make the filter in front of the lens, the better.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

I've been wanting to photograph this, but never had the time to get up there. Great meetup idea. Looking forward to it.

Can you please let me know how long and difficult the trail is to falls. Hopefully I'll be having a knee replacement next summer. For now I'm a bit limited. Thank You

I am a seasonal park ranger there and Susquehanna. The trail to the falls is 1.1 miles. It isn't that bad of a trail but it does have some up and down sections and you do have to traverse across rocks in the creek to get to the other side to get close to the front part falls, that may hinder you. It strictly depends on what your knee can take, if it's bad I wouldn't recommend it especially of there is snow on the trail.

I was out at Kilgore last week about 1:00 and the shadows were al over making it hard to get even light anywhere on the water. Lots of dark bands of shadows. Would suggest getting there by 9:30 or 10:00 in order to have fewer shadows across the falls.

I'd be careful what you wish for. The Farmers' Almanac says we're going to get walloped in January and February.

Last year 3 of us went to Lock 12 in Feb when there was snow on the ground. I wanted to go to Kilgore last winter, but when conditions were good I didn't want to drive. ;-)

I like this idea. Hopefully we can get it scheduled. I know we have talked about going to Kilgore in the spring.
