i wasn't very good about taking notes on locations but if memory serves me correct, i think it was at Saint-Sulpice. i went back a second time after the first day and spent a couple of hours just taking it all in. i have several other photos yet to be processed that may fit well with this image for a body of work called "Quiet Conversations". it was the setting, the dramatic side lighting and this hulking figure scrunched over that caught my attention. i especially liked the rim lighting on his shoulders and collar. just enough definition to suggest his massive presence. it was almost as if someone crafted together a stage with a character that seems dissonant to the scene. this character reminded me of Michael Clarke Duncan (, the actor in The Green Mile. the vat of holy water, the photos, the candles, etc., all adds interesting elements to the story-line and conjures up questions about who is this person and why is he here. perhaps he was grieving, repenting or just seeking solace. i left only a tiny bit of detail in the shadow areas to maintain mystery and went for a split tone to impart mood. i submitted this image along with some others to B+W Magazine. will let you know if anything happens.
