Middle Creek Wildlife Area

Sunrise is at 7am, so any early "birds" will meetup at 7am to get some sunrise shots. A second meetup time will be 9am for those who don't want to get out so early. We should have an opportunity for many different birds including Snow Geese and Tundra Swans. Some trails and roads may not be open in February so we will work with whatever access we are given. UPDATED - Meeting place for both times (7am and 9am) will be at Willow Point. There is a parking lot marked "Willow Point" and the short level trail to the point starts at the corner of this parking lot. Because of potential snow and ice conditions, be very careful driving and walking.

The snow and frozen lake did not provide the kind of photo opportunities which are often available at other times of the year.

Photography is as much about potential as it is of taking the perfect picture! I got some nice pictures of animal tracks on the pristine snow today!

I drove to Middle Creek this afternoon (Friday 14th) and the main roads are plowed and paved roads are bare. The lake is frozen and there are not a lot of waterfowl in the area at this time. So, the photo opportunities will be limited. The parking lot for Willow Point is plowed and the path to the point was cleared today with a snowblower. The last weather report I heard is calling for more snow so all the roads, lots and paths may have some snow cover in the morning. I plan to go in the morning and walk out to Willow Point. The previous plan to meet along the road makes no sense at this point so if you decide to go I will be at Willow Point instead. I hope the sunrise is good and hope there are some other subjects of interest to photograph.

Bailing on this one due to the expected snow. Middlecreek is still frozen and I expect the walk to willow point to be snowed under.

A camera club friend with a contact at Middle Creek offered this info: The tour roads are off limits to vehicles and pedestrians till March 1.
As far as wildfowl viewing, Willowpoint and along the main road are the best areas.
The Vista's overlooking the lake (up Millstone Trail) need to be trimmed out, which happens later in the spring. There are some old ruins along the Elder's Run trail (park at Mt. Springs Rd lot) south of the lake a couple miles. Other than that, the other areas are pretty much catch as catch can this time of year.

I was there on Saturday, whole dam is frozen, except for a smallish patch to the left of willow point. There were geese and swans off in the distance.

Also had a report of a Golden Eagle in the area. Let's hope it's still around.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
